When you do fn+crt/lcd (f8), first it will enable the secondary display while keeping your lcd on. Hit it again and only your secondary display comes on. If you close the lid completely the secondary display might go off to though I'm not sure.

If you use both external and internal, does it consider the external "primary"?

Yes. Set the XPS in power options to do NOTHING when you close the lid. So, when you have your external (seconday) hooked up, your primary is blank and you can close the lid and work without issues.

No, it considers it seconday.

You can make it consider it primary. If you leave it on secondary it may give you tearing problems!

Enable both monitors, go to the displays page in advanced video card setup, and put the lcd as secondary and your external as primary if you don't wanna have problems.

Thank you very much Flav

Yup, what I do:

-Connect the monitor
-Enable it in display properties
-Set it as primary
-Select the LCD and remove checkmark "extend my desktop on this display..."
-Apply

Your laptop LCD will turn off and you can safely close the lid.

I want to have a game running on the primary 2405, and use the laptop screen for Teamspeak and IRC and web.

sure... that'll work

just don't disable the laptop's LCD then. The 2405 does still need to be set as primary, however.

I think you need to "extend desktop" in order to not "clone" the displays or otherwise you can't be doing 2 different things.
