Acer Aspire 5652WLMi - this is the one to go for!!!

Thread Starter
I've been looking for a great laptop for some time now, checking many different websites and magazines. I'm a kind of guy that doesn't just buy anything 'cause it's cheep, but i always do my homework and try to find what's best on all sides, this means value versus performance. And after a long month i've found was i was looking for! It's an Acer Aspire 5652WLMi/£999/.
You all talking about the TravelMate 8204WLMi(£1500) or the Aspire 5672WLMi/£1099/. But look closer on this website, which is in german/there is an option to change it to english as well/http://www.notebookcheck.com this website has a nice review about this laptop. As you will see, this laptop is a great performer and does an excellent
job in all tasks and what's best the graphic's card Nvidia GeForce 7600 Go beats the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. I'm just a casual gamer, but i'm interested in games and graphics cards and it looks like Nvidia is on top again with this one. I've been searching more for this graphics card, and for someone interested in games this graphics card is a better choice!!! The laptop may not have the processor of the TravelMate 8204WLMi but it costs less and it performs almost as well and it's even better in games. There is not much info about the laptop but from what i've found it looks that the graphics card is almost as good as the old great GeForce Go 6800!!! So if you like playing games and don't want to spend some extreme amount of money this one will do perfectly and it will make you happy for a long time to come if you playing games or just watching a DVD. I've just ordered one and can't wait. Ones it arrives i'll will keep you posted and do some small review of my own. Thanks

The 7600 in the Aspire may perform better than the X1600 in the Toshiba they compared it to, but the overall performance in 3DMark is worse than the X1600 in the 8204.
8204 has a faster processor though, which would increase overall 3dmark score, you should compare the gpu scores
post #4 of 17
With laptops there's no point in comparing the components in isolation since, more often than not, they can't be changed around. Saying that a particular graphics card is better than another is no consolaiton when the overall performance in a game is worse...

I've just received my Aspire 5652 last night as a replacement for my Aspire 5024 which met with an unfortunate accident. The 5024 was a very good machine, but the 5652 is even better.

So far I've used it for some day to day office stuff which is very responsive, but more importantly I've installed WoW for my gaming addiction. So far I've bumped all the video settings up to max and it plays between 40-60 FPS, dropping to the 40's during the more hectic forested areas. Running on battery it runs around the 30 FPS mark which is still very playable, although I haven't tested how long the battery lasts so far.

I will load up FEAR and test at some point

I will be interested to hear how fear does on the machine as I have to lower the settings quite a lot on my 5672

Im interested in getting a new laptop and well Dual core is really getting my atention. I however have some doubts.

Right now the only laptop dual cores are the intel core duos, but they are not 64 bits. does that affect the performance when the new windows come, or will they be still useful? depending on this i might simply wait for dual core turion. because that is whats holding me from getting the machine.

As for fear, i think it can run Fear in medium settings, some in high.

I run fear on my lap (Travelmate 4402,1.6ghz turion, 1gb of ram and Ati X700 64mb) i use medium settings for graphics and CPU. i get very playable frame rates. at 800x600 res.

using the Fear test, i get lowest fps: 17, average 30 and highest 83. having lowest frame 20% or so of the time.

Considering i have a 3d mark03 score of 4400, and this laptop probably near de 8000+, and like 3k score on 3dmark 05, i 'd say you can pretty much run the game at medium settings with fluid gameplay.

I've now got some F.E.A.R. test scores for the 5652.

Medium settings, High detail, Volumetric Lighting on, FSAA off

1024x768
Min 24
Avg 39
Max 75

800x600
Min 35
Avg 57
Max 117

I've been playing the game at 1024x768 and it's reasonably playable, plus it looks awesome.

wow, that beats my x1400 hands down then, tsk tsk BOFH1971 you should have been more patient
I wonder if acer would mount an x1600 in place of my x1400 if I were to pay them enough
post #10 of 17
I think your out of luck there, the GFX card is integrated into the motherboard, not an MXM module.
I know its not an mxm module, but heck acer have the capability to solder on another one,
or maybe the motherboard from 5652 will fit in my chassis, theyre the same dimensions.

If I get my nerve I may even try some extreme modding providing I can purchase an x1600 core

The Travel mate 8204 has the T2500 2.0GHz Dual Core proceessor and the Ati Mobility Radeon x1600 (which is a far better card than the Geforce 7600 by the way) so to claim that your 5652 is better than the Travelmate 8204 for games is completely untrue. If you had another 5652 or 5672 with the x1600 to compare with your 5652 with Geforce Go 7600 you would find the x1600 stronger. An x1600 in a Travelmate with a T500 processor however would be even stronger still. See the chart below for GPU capabilities:I'm not sure whether a 5672 with an x1600 would be stronger than a 5652 with a 7600 though. On paper the x1600 is better but I am starting to wonder whether inn practice they are a lot closer than i first thought. http://www.killernotebooks.com/image...pu%20pixel.jpg

As far as performance goes the 7600 and x1600 are rated the same, and as far as benchmarks go the 7600 beats the x1600 just by a bit with the same system. I think he was just trying to mention the fact that the 8204WLMi costs more than 500 bucks more than the aspire series yet their GPUs are about the same (if 7600 is actually better in same system then even more wow), while the CPUS are slightly lower the extra features are slightly less the aggregate benefit does not justify the aggregate cost of 500 or more dollars. Now as far as I know, the 5652WLMi I cannot find in Canada, is it available in north america? If not i'm stuck with the 5672WLMi, i really want the 8204 though lol..... anyone got a better suggestion?

I'm looking for an efficiently sized desktop replacement while I go travel for my work term.

Hope you'd share with us 2 very important issues on the 5652 :

1. Heat
2. Battery life

I sold off my 5673 becos I just about have enough on the heat it generates. Makes my palms hot and sweaty, very uncomfortable. Wonder if the 5652 runs cooler?

I'm still sticking with Acer becos they have the most features on their laptops. When every other laptops are doing away with PCMIA card slot and Audio line-in, 5673 still have every ports you need. It also has a very useful 4-way controller on its mouspad too. Not that Acer's service is super but at least it is way much better than Dell, HP, Toshiba, Asus, LG and Samsung.

Oh yes, I have previously made a side by side comparison with a Dell on the wireless signal strength. While my friend's Dell just could not connect to the weak signal in the room, my Acer is already surfing the net like nobody's business !!

Post your 3DMark scores and I'll do the same.
I don't think you can buy this in north american and also have access to warranty due to this being an european model i think.... I want this laptop badly, cuz it's roughly the same price as 5672 but I like it's specs much more.

WoW - check the scores! (copied from the site mentioned) This sure beats the 1250 in 3DMark06 on my 5672x1600
