Hard Drive Problems...

Thread Starter
The other night I noticed my hard drive was acting *really* slow, things wouldn't run at all, windows didn't want to load. I was figuring I had a virus or something so I virus-scanned, nothing. Weird. So I turn it off and back on, now it won't go in to windows. Not good.

Just about then I turn it off and back on. The hard drive makes this unearthly noise -- kind of a squealing-scraping-metallic sound. Ick. That can't be good. So, i turn it off.......pull hte hard drive, something's rattling. Uh-oh. Well, I figure its already broken, so it can't break much worse. I smack the hard drive, put it back in, and turn the laptop on. It starts squealing, so i hit the corner of the laptop and it works fine. It's been working fine for almost a day now -- now i'm worried.

Do i trust the drive or not? Has anybody else had a problem like this with the Toshiba 5400 rpm 40 GB drive? I would just break down and buy another HD, but im not in the situation of having money to throw around, so I can't exactly do that. Anybody else have any information on things like this happening?

I would do the following:
1). Backup everything that is important to me.
2). If it still squeals, etc... get a new HDD. If it is covered under warranty, then call for an RMA.

My best guess, not being there, is that the HDD is failing and doesn't have much life left.

Sounds like a motor problem. You are VERY lucky to get it working correctly again.... the laptop hard drive in my print server sitting here at my feet started squealing and not working last week, and it still hasn't freed up I second what G-Omaha said. Good luck!

you better hope the heads don't make contact with the platter before you backup.
call for an RMA
