Thanks, I think I do want Sonic for burning DVDs, at least until I buy my own burning software.

Here's a list of all the software that supposedly came with my machine, according to the order details. I only got a disk for Word Perfect and Audigy ADVANCED MB. But I think Power DVD and Sonic are all I want to get from Dell.

there wasn't a whole lot to it, i called them and told them i was going to reinstall windows, but i needed the source media. they gave me the "there's a restore partition on your hard drive" garbage, and i told them i was deleting that partition, and needed new source media. they got my customer ID and looked up my order, and then put in an order for the discs. about 3 days later they arrived.

Samething for me

When I received my Windows XP Re-installation DVD, there was only one disk in the box !

So now I have the WordPerfect CD and WinXP DVD...

Is there any installation files in the Programs Files folder so I can put the .exe in my USB key and re-install it after that I re-install Windows ?

Thank you !

could you be a little more specific?

Well....

I was asking me if there is a .exe in the program files ( i.e. : with AOL) to put it into my USB Key to be able to install it on my laptop after the Windows re-installation ...

Because when I received my OS DVD, there wasn't any other CD's than the Windows XP one.

In summary, am I obligated to re-call the Dell customer care to re-order the powerdvd CD, sonic myDVD + recordnow CD and Dell tools CD or I can find the installer programs in a folder ? Here is my question..

I think I don't need to have the drivers CD because I download all the neccessary drivers from Dell support website.

Thank you for your idea

oh, i get what you're saying.

dell should send the discs for all the software you mentioned (they sent them to me all in one package, others have said they just sent the windows xp disc.. your mileage may vary).

I don't have my Dell with any of the 'extra' applications any longer, but I would doubt there are any installer files still laying around on the drive. I think you'll end up asking Dell for the CDs.... Mark

Thank you very much for your explications !

I will re-call Dell tomorrow afternoon after school to see why they don''t send me all the CD's needed to make a clean install of Windows XP.

Thank you once again

Good night !

I don't have a Dell (have an ASUS), but I imagine it should be the same... if you have an I386 folder on your HD, then you should be able to create a Windows XP CD from it

http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_...tall/index.htm

I tried it on my ASUS A6VC to give myself a clean install and it worked perfectly. Since the guide was written for Thinkpad, just don't follow the step about the hidden partition if you don't have to.

for the sake of simplification, i decided to post here rather than make ANOTHER thread on a clean install of XP. basically, if i get a new HD from newegg.com, will the disks i request from dell (OEM CD, drivers/utilities, etc.) still work on the new hard drive? or will i have to do something else? thanks in advance.

copy the files to your hard drive, delete the $OEM$ folder, and use nlite to make a custom install disc.. no more unnecessary bloatware (also, you can remove windows components that you don't use, and setup unattended install!)

That should be all you need unless you need/want MediaDirect. In that case, you'd need to get a copy of the MediaDirect 2.0 Reinstallation CD... Mark

Nope, they will work just fine.

GET the necessary drivers from Dell.com or have on DISK!

1. Put reinstallation CD in CD Drive, turn off computer, and unplug
2. unscrew and remove Hard Drive. Unscrew and remove "faceplate"
3. Screw faceplate on new drive, and install drive.
4. Turn on system, Hit F12 until it brings you to boot screen
5. Choose Boot from CD/DVD drive, and follow the easy prompts.
6. After it starts installing, it is idiot proof
7. Remember to have the driver disk ready though so you can install them after windows gets done.

Can you use a usb thumb drive to install those drivers at the last step instead of using a disk? Or is there some usb driver that would be needed first?

That should work fine as I recall USB support is 'native' to XP... Mark

yeah, the only problem you might have is that your USB port could possibly not recognize a usb 2.0 drive without chipset drivers.. worst case scenario, it would work at USB 1.1 speed (12mbit/sec) until you install your drivers.

I have another problem. After formatting and installing Windows MCE, I installed all the usual drivers and necessary software. Even got Media direct working with no problems.
Now, my problem is I can't watch DVDs in Media Center. I have installed PowerDVD. I can watch DVDs in PowerDVD and in Windows Media Player. But when I try watch a DVD in Media Center I get the following error:
"DVD Decoder Error. The DVD decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please re-start Media Center or the computer or both"

I have restarted Media Center, the laptop, unistalled PowerDVD, installed WinDVD 6 trial (i think), Uninstalled that, reinstalled PowerDVD. Updated PowerDVD using the link in PowerDVD.
Only realised after all this, that the PowerDVD disc that I got from Dell is version 5.5. I had version 5.7 in the original install. Could this be screwing me up? Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions for fixing this?

DHzer0point driver does not like Media Center!!

Hey, solved the problem. Looks like Media Center does not like the DHzer0point driver. It will not allow you to play DVDs in Media Center.
I had started a fresh install of Windows XP using the DH0point driver from the start. DVDs would play in PowerDVD & Media Player but not in Media Center.
So in order to get it working I had to uninstall drivers for display and all associated software, used DriverClean in Safe mode and reinstalled the most up to date Dell drivers. Now it all works perfect.
Haven't tried the omega drivers to see if they have this issue. Any here know the answer?
