64 bit Mobile Intel processors in Mac Book Pro in July?

TG Daily claims that faced with increasing competitive pressure from AMD, Intel has accelerated the launch of its upcoming processors.

The upcoming processors include Woodcrest, Conroe and Merom. All three are now expected to be shipping "in volume" in Q3 2006. This could mean that processors would be available as early as June or July of this year.

Conroe processors are Intel's Desktop CPU from their Core microarchitecture. They come in a 65-nm process and are speculated/rumored to be used in Apple's upcoming Intel PowerMac revisions.

Meanwhile, Merom is Intel's 64-bit mobile processor which is said to have better performance than the current Core Duos with the same power consumption. The Merom processor is also said to be pin compatible with the current Core Duo processors. Merom processors would presumably be used in upcoming MacBook Pros.

Little has been said about Apple's plans (if any) for Woodcrest, which is Intel's server-targeted processor

So now the question is to wait for this to happen or buy current models. I know I am faced with this very same decision and I just brough a mini.

Q3 of this year was always the plan. Also, Conroe and Merom are 64bit capable but can also run 32bit.

I can't imagine how much faster the OS will be when they move over to 64bit.

I currently have a PB which will be 1 years old in June, so I'm in no rush.

Holy shet batman. This is good news since I really need a notebook but opted to wait for merom. When is Merom 800 FSB expected to debut? Anybody knows?

I am in a similar situation as you computerstud waiting for merom. They should be out in early 2007 with the new chipset etc. Link:

Derek,
Are you going to jump on the 667 Apple Merom or wait till 2007 for the 800 fsb version? Do you even think it is worth it to wait for the 800FSB? The speed increase won't be noticeable since intel dual core is an overkill for all the things I'm going to do. I just want to be able to have 64bit capabilities in case everything switches to 64bit. I'm planning to use the Merom Apple for 4 to 6 years until I'm done with medical school. I can't not wait anymore, running out of napkins to wipe my drools for the Apple intel. 13.3 " powerbook and I'm jumping on it.
