You WILL notice the difference between 7200rpm and 5400rpm, hard drive speed is a bottleneck.

Yup aha. I own several laptops with 5400 speed and several with 7200 speed and to me the only time i dont notice the difference is when i do typical stuff like listeing to mp3s and surfing the net. But when i do multimedia stuff it becomes really obvious.

The MBP came with Office Mac trial as well as Apple iWorks trial. It kicks in once you start up one of the programs in the suite. The trial period is 30 days. I have about 25 days to purchase the software. I'll take my time and purchase the software. So far, Office Word has been awesome. I'm used the Office 2003 so this is just wonderful. The options in the suite are just great. Entourage is something I need to get used to but it seems like a great program to manage your time, email, and projects.

Oh. Hopefully they will give me the office mac trial version as well. I would love to test it out and see the ditterence between it and windows pc version

It should. Fundamentally, they are both the same. It's little things that make the difference between Mac and PC version.

Hi,

I tried both iWorks and Office.mac 2004. I went with Office simply because Pages did not deliver on the promise of accurate rendering of documents imported from Word.

As to Mail, I am using Mail because I have gotten tired of Entourage/Outlook. All I had to do was find and download the free "httpmail" plugin to give me full capabilities with my email, which is hotmail. By the way, Mail is a VERY nice email client.

Hey thanks now thats what im talking about. Great advice. on the mail program thingy. I will definitely try it out. I will most likely use iworks until i can get the mac office version (thing costs $149). But i still have little things to get like a bag to carry the thing in. I dont think my alienware sidebag will fit it since my alienware is only 16 inches and i believe the bag was sized to fit it (but i can be wrong ). This apple wll also be my first 17 incher since I only had the dell e1705 about two weeks.

What kind of full capabilities? I wasn't able to get Mail to work with Gmail. Is that what the httpmail plugin is for??

I have both yahoo mail and gmail working on the Mail.app, you have to go in set up a new account in the Mail.app program, and enable POP Fowarding in both Gmail, and Yahoo mail.

Neo Office and Open Office are both good alternatives for M$ Office.

For Gmail, when you set up your account in Mail and 'synced' your mailbox with your online Gmail Inbox, did you receive emails addressed to you in Mail, that were sent to other people? Everytime I replied to someone, I received that as a seperate email. In other words, my replies were sent to me.

That happened to me in Outlook and it happened to me in Entourage.....

The httpmail is a freeware plug-in that adds to Mail the functionality to handle web based email services. It was simple as download, install and then also to set Mail to use rosetta (I gather because the plugin is not yet Universal Binary). You will then have an additional option for setting up email accounts named httpmail.

And by the way, I tried both Neo Office and Open Office. Both had the same problems correctly rendering Word documents as iWorks did.

On another front, I got Darwine working (albeit the fonts look a little old because I am having problems getting FreeType updated). Ran my first Windows app in mac OS last night, results were generally good. Apple should REALLY think about incorporating Darwine (or an Apple custom build of it) in the next iteration of OSX.

I have not received any copies of emails that I sent to other people using Gmail's POP Forwarding.

I visited the Gmail chat and I found out that everyone is suffering from the same problem. When pop is enabled in Gmail, your Mail application downloads all mail, including Sent items. You need to create a Rule or Filter in the Mail program to move all Gmail Sent Items to the Mail program's Sent folder.

That's easy....
