Check Fedora Core, it is the community version of RedHat I tihnk you are referring to. Red Hat concentrates on its enterprise offerings while supporting Fedora at the same time.

why in the holy hell would you pick Fedora over anything else out there is beyond me

You may want to try Foxlinux! I hated any rpm distro until I ran it. Now it ranks with PCLinux as my favorite. It is easy to configure and use! ABF it seems like for whatever reason RedHat has a large following. So to each his own on selecting a distro. As I stated I hated all RH based distros until I tried PCLinux which is Mandrake based, which is RedHat based. etc.etc.etc.

Did I mention FOX ROX!!!!!!!!!

i was meaning to try fox, but never got around to it.

in the meantime i agree PCLinuxOS Preview .92 is one of the better distros out there. However, Ubuntu (and Xubuntu w/ some tweaks) is my favorite (can't stand Kubuntu though). And yeah, i am using Mandrake 2005 on my desktop currently and it works great.

my beef with RH is that i ran RH8 through Fedora 4 (1,2,3,4) and they have all messed up my system bad.... haven't tried 5, and not planning on it. I've learned my lesson.

abf, what's the difference between ubuntu and Xubuntu? Also, what hardware do you use

All *untu distros use the same basic core and package configs. The diff comes in here:

Ubuntu --- > Gnome + basic desktop programs
Kubuntu ---> KDE + basic desktop programs
Edubuntu ----> Gnome (?) with extra educational and networking progs
Xubuntu ----> XFCE4 and very limited config (still in BETA...and needs lots of work)
Server ---> Just your basic ubuntu core without any fancy progs or guis

my hardware:
AMD64 3200+, ATi 9700 128mb, 1gb pc2700 ram, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, 24x cd-rw/dvd, atheros wifi. (lappy is Uniwill 258KA0)
