8204 Rip

Thread Starter
purchased first 8204 on 21st February ... had buzzing noise, dark areas on the screen, Lan problems, NIC problem, screen light leakage ...

i have now had 2 repalcements (0306 builds) with similar problems ...

Acer are still unable to even acknowledge that there is a problem with this laptop.

Laptops direct have shown massive short comings on replacing faulty products within a reasonable time period.

Over 2 months on and i have a very sick 8204 waiting to be collected for a full and final refund. shame really as it looks like a stunning laptop ...

On a positive ... many thanks to all the acer forums for the help given to resolve the technical problems.

However, after 2 months of frustration - I will be defecting to Dell XPS M1170 or something similar ...

officially it is 7 days ... However, if you purchase a laptop which is faulty from new you have the right to a full refund or replacement.

it took a few weeks to realise that the fault which was present from day one was not going to be solved by upgraded drivers.

I gave them a simply decision ... repalce with 0306 latop (and check it is working) or face legal action. They replaced the laptop but faiuled to check it ... hence i have now said full refund or face legal action (small claims court = simple).

if you purchase a 8204 and are not happy in any way shape or form get a full refund. the laptop has too many problems backed up by Acer legendary poor support.

I gotta agree and I gotta thank to this forum for all the help too! I think it is great meant to be laptop, but ... it is really shame what the result is. I have had 4 replacements and got the refund. Going for nx9420 from HP with 2GB of RAM additional, which is 2/3 of the price of 8204, with 17" glossy screen (made by Philips!) and only 3 centimeters longer than 8204 with all the other dimensions same (just the weight is 3.35 kg, quite nic for 17"!!!). Equipped with X1600 256MB discrete and SATA HDD plus 667MHz RAM. Just my two cents...

i would stay clear of the X1600 card - it is not just acer who have problems with this component.

Just so you know, I also checked out the nx9420 before buying my Acer. The comparable T2500 model does not come with an X-brite screen (even though it's listed as an option) and there is no DVI port on the laptop. FYI.

I am going with 2400 model with BrightView screen and I do not need DVI for daily use. I never attach my notebook to excternal monitor, especially if it is 17". Plus it is like 1000 USD cheaper here, and I know I am gonna swap it for another in two years time, so...that is an option definitelly for me

I can't see an nx9420 having 667MHz memory, it's listed as 533MHz memory. Another thing, there is no indication that the HD is SATA, makes you wonder if it is or not?

No, I got that beauty open and the specs on this market in the Europe clearly say 1 module of 1024MB 667RAM with second slot free and SATA disc as standard. Pluse really lightweight (3.35kg) for 17" lappy. It is gona kick the butt of the MBPro with 17", cause the price is really nice.

Lightweight for a 17" laptop is great, but for many the overall weight is too much. 3.3kg is roughly 7.3 lbs

The nx9420 is a sweet notebook. In fact, I almost ordered one over the Acer 8204. But I have a real problem with companies that keep that pigeonhole their customers. When I spoke to the sales people at HP, they said that they are planning on releasing a new T2500 model with Brightview. To me, that was the dealbreaker. Why would I buy a T2500 now when a better one is right around the corner? I just wasn't willing to compromise processor speed for display quality.

And if you decide later that you do want to use DVI, you can always use their port replicator, which gives you that function.

That is very correct, actually, I do not use the DVI at all, but should I want to, the prot replicator is like 100USD!! That is not bad deal for 17" lappy considering the fact there are like 30 outputs plus video and sound and tons of USB and high powered USB... I mean 1.83 or 2.00GHz is not that much recognized in gaming, video editing or other stuff still can go with it if you stick with another gig of RAM, which I do the next day after getting my nx9420. And all this for the price 1000USD cheaper than 8204! What the heck, that is not a bad deal I guess!

Well, I got it in my hand, and it really is not too too heavy. It is certainly half a kilogram of usual notebook weight (15 or 15") but I think one of the lightest in the cathegory and for the screensize very portable! It is just 3 centimeters longer than 8204 and 3 milimeters thicker. Only weight is the other parameter difference. And all this with numlock integrated. Not bad I guess.

Yep, I ould be bit more careful about blaming the X1600 - I mean it is mounted to MackBooks Pro, to HPs and the whole range of ASUS notebooks with the CAD version implemented even in IBM...

B U T

yes, there appear to be some troubles with X1600 I just cant confirm if it is only the matter of ACER build or the HyperMemory or if it is widespread through the notebookrange. Actually browsing Apple forum, HP and ASUS, nobody really complained about it ecept from here, but also not that many notebooks with this chip were actually sold.

I really would be interested in this too. Tomorrow I am getting my HP nx9420 whcih has this ATI chip and I will be able to tell more. I hope only positive things, otherwise it will be damn too difficult to get a good laptop as all of the higher end lappies are equipped with this X1600 thing. Still - ATI never released official driver for mobility X1xxx series cards - weird, isnt it?
