SUSE 9 and 8887 Install Success

Thread Starter
I want to start this by saying I am in no way a LINUX expert and this is the first time I have installed LINUX on a laptop. I currently have a RedHat 7.3 server and now SUSE 9.0 on the 8887 laptop.

My laptop configuration:

Sager 8887
Pentium IV 3.06 with HT on
TV Tuner
CDRW/DVD
2nd Hard Drive
1 GB of RAM

I attempted to install several different types of LINUX with little or no success including:

Red Hat 7.3 (Failed to install well)
Red Hat 9.0 (Installed, failed to boot at all)
Mandrake 9.2 (Installed, booted, but would not take software or get sound working)
SUSE 9.0 about 7 different times (no luck installing)
SUSE 9.0 last install (worked like a charm)

I just wanted to document what I did so others could benefit. As I said I am very much a newbie to all this and am learning as I go but could have used the advise when I started.

Boot with DVD from SUSE 9.0 Professional ($79 at Borders)
Chose 1600x1200 (F2)
Chose 'Manual installation'
Choose appropriate languages
Step through the drivers:
Load usbcore
Load usb-uhci
Load ehci-hcd
Load ieee1394
DO NOT LOAD ohci1394 DO NOT LOAD
Load usb-storage
Load lsm_mod
Choose new installation and select your software
I partitioned my machine to boot to Windows XP on HD1 and SUSE on HD2.

Once the machine reboots (I had weird trouble with LiLo but no trouble with Grub) you will step through loading the other devices. SUSE picked up my sound, TV tuner, network and wireless cards with no work on my part. I loaded a ton of software as I am trying to find my favorites.

The only thing that doesn't appear to work is sound on my tv card but I am sure that is just the software I am using or something to that extent. Any suggestions are welcome so please bring them on.

I will post more if there is an interest as I try new things.

SuSE is good for 8890 too!

I just wanted to let 8890 owners know that the default SuSE 9.0 intalls and works perfectly from the get go. I had no troubles at all, one install (all using the defaults) and all has worked perfectly. The internal bluetooth did not get detected, but I don't care at the moment, becase I am not using it anyway. I only installed the personal edition, figuring that I would just do FTP installs of any packages that were not included in the personal edition from a friendly mirror site, which was indeed the case. I wanted to install KDevelop for KDE and that went totally smoothly after the fact.

One thing tho, I have no idea if the internal USB wireless works under SuSE because I had removed it and am using an old D-Link DWL-650 pcmcia card. This card works fine as long as WEP is disabled on the access point. I am still trying to track down the reason for that, but I haven't had much luck. No biggie for me, WEP is kind of lame anyway and I am using MAC address access lists, which are, of course, just as lame.

Anyway, just wanted to report another SuSE sucess!

On a side note, I must say that I really like linux as a desktop OS so far. It feels much more lean and mean. I don't feel like there is a ton of ugly stuff like Microsoft spyware running in the background. The font antialiasing is not quite as nice as Cleartype but it is totally usable. All in all, very nice and I hope to be developing KDE apps in the near future!

As far as partitioning my 60gb drive goes, I used a copy of Partition Magic 8 running under XP to resize my XP partition. I left the space for the linux partitions unallocated. YaST totally figured out what I wanted and "did the right thing"(tm). The default boot loader (grub?) is working fine and is totally adequate for my needs.

I am a happy linux/Sager camper!

phar,
Have you used you wireless to connect? I have just installed suse 9 and everything is going very well. YaST detected my wireless card (it is the prism 802.11b) and seemed to install it correctly. In fact after looking in the control center it seems that everything is ready to go. However I am unable to connect with it.

I'm sitting here next to the access point and I have to plug in the network cable because the wireless isn't getting the job done.

Do I somehow need to turn the card on? Is there a control panel for the card somewhere, or can I check its settings in a config file? I'd sure appreciate any help. Thanks,
Mike

I am having the same problem. When it boots it even gives an ip address to the wireless card. Tells me WEP isnt enabled and everything. But it just will not go out to the internet

what does dmesg say? does ifconfig show you having a gateway? As to the wep not working. Check the firmware version. My netgear MA401ra would puke on wep until I updated the firmware.
