Some people dont mind the Fn button at the far left, but others are so used to use their little pinkie to do their Ctrl for them, be it for games or quick editing in photoshop or whatever, that eventually they come to hate that the Fn button is there instead - doing you no favours for your current tasks.

It interrupts your workflow having to look down on the keyboard to hit the second button. And the Ctrl is used a lot for shortcuts and the like.

Just out of Curisity where would be a better place?? I kinda like it there I had an HP where it was where the ALT is and no left alt that I think is worse.

Please dodn't argue about the asthetics of putting the Fn button in place of the Ctrl.
We are interested in a solution to swap them around. Other laptops have put them in order or released a bios for it....

LOL! sirius, its obvious Asoul doesn't understand that you don't like the FN key in that position.

For the record Asoul:
Normal Keyboard is: ctrl - Windows - Alt
Normal Laptop Keyboard is: ctrl - Windows - alt
Addition Function Laptop Keyboards is: FN - ctrl - Windows - Alt

THis is a problem because the left ctrl is one of the most important keys for windows, and that fact that a semi useless key like FN was placed there, is extremely annoying for notebook users who make this transition.

I for one will havta make this transition because i will be buying an asus notebook, but im still gonna try everything possible to remap those two keys.

THe problem is that sirius has basically tried everything, and nothing as worked, hence he still hoping someone out here on the forums know how to do it for his particular laptop at the least.

Unfortunately this is looking grim.

However, we have another way, we can tell our retailers to give input to ASUS regarding a patch as someone else mentioned so that this will give users the ability to remap (switch) the keys.

One thing you can do is possibly try Sager's patch?? i dunno, that may make the case much much worse LOL.

Unfortunately i don't have laptop to test the FN key and fiddle with it myself to help everyone else out on this issue.

Over time, as you know people just get use to it.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks,

I do understand that he does not like it there but theres nuttin to do about it other than learn to hit the right key. If you have a problem hitting the CRTL key and not the FN DON"T USE A LAPTOP.

Asol,
other notebook manufacturers have got it right!! (HP, Toshiba)
others got it wrong and put it right!! (Sager, Siemens Fujitsu)
asus hasn't got around to it yet... but be sure they will if they plan to stay in the laptop trade!!

I odn't think ASUS is going to change the keyboard layout because a few people can nothit the right key. Just like ASUS is not going to release a BIOs update because of a few complaints about the MT-40 not working in the A6 series. Its just the truth. If you don't like the keybaord layout get a laptop with a layput more to your liking. I personaly would be Pi$$ed off if they changed the layout since I know how to hit the CTRL and not the FN when I need it.

Well not sure about the others but the Acer Ferrari had it CTRL FN WINDOWS ALT which was just plain retarded. Atleast ASUS kept the CTRL WINDOWS and ALT keys in order.

Asoul, can you please stop repeating yourself. I started this thread and I'm looking for a solution and you're hijacking.

Please only comment if you know of a way to solve the problem...

I have givin you a solution DEAL WITH or get another notebook its that simple. ASUS is not going to rewrite the bios to please you nor will they redo the key layout it please you. Its that simple!

As for hijacking i have yet got off topic so its not really hijacking

sirius, just stay kool bro, i will be in the same boat as you, just like many others.

Now I have been reading about switching the FN and ctrl key from when i started looking at laptops clsoe to 9 months ago. Back then there was no solution.

There we many threads across all 3 forums regarding this and of course they all led to the same conclusions as this thread.

A lot of people do complain about this, but you WILL get used to it overtime. If you want you can search for these thread over all 3 forums. I quote from someone who is very respectable (i think it was chazman) "I kinda like the FN key closer to my hand" Yes he does not like it, but he got used to it. Later on in the thread he tells us that its hard for him to use a regular keyboard because he uses the laptop keyboard so much.

As previously tested there is no remapping for the FN key for ASUS laptops YET. Me and Coriolis did some research about this along time ago and came to a conclusion that you gotta get used to it, because the FN key is somehow linked to the BIOS and wired that way, thus Windows does NOT recognize it as a normal key. HENCE remapping will not work.

As previously stated companies released back to allow users to fix this. However ASUS is still a brand new baby to the market and has not released a BIOS update or patch to fix it. Will they in the future? Who knows.

People, like Danny, Justin, Eddie, Sasha and others have a lot of SAY to asus and through them you can push for the BIOS/patch that will allow users to fix this.

PS: You are not the only one who feels like this, Infact you are the MAJORITY of people who feel and know the FN key is in the wrong spot.

To make it official YES Its in the WRONG spot, but i am 100% its CHEAPER to put it there and code it, compared to making in the right side of ctrl.

Also ASUS will not change their keyboard layout. Infact once a brand choses to go one way with the keyboard, it sticks. LOL.

>>>>Now you do sorta have a small choice.

I personally would be using the laptop keyboard at school for notetaking and hopefully not much multi-tasking because of the FN key, but i know i will get used to it over time.

When im a home im gonna quickly plug in a USB keyboard and then game. There are three positives for this method.

1) You can game properly on the USB keyboard, compared to the laptop keyboard. (you really shouldn't game in school, you'll look bad)

2) The wear and tear of gaming on you laptop keyboard will be a lot lower since you'll be gaming on a USB keyboard.

3) You will slowly get used to the FN while your at school, until ASUS releases a patch or if they never do. (who knows)

sirius all you gotta do is just hang in there, also there is no CURRENT solution.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

MysticGolem

I think it was the pushing of Sager that eventually made them release the BIOS patch for the 4080.

I support Sirius. Whether or not Asus will release a patch is just anyones guesswork, and whos to say someone doesnt figure out a way to do it yourself. I know how I can get used to the FN button. The reason I revisit this thread for is ideas ppl may have on the switch.

Well if there was a solution and if someone posted it, that person would get a tonne of credit and man everyone would check it out.

Unfortunately there's no current solution and we gotta wait.

Hang Tight.

You could always mod your keyboard if it bothers you that badly. In mod I mean take apart and reroute the foils for the keys. This is possable trust me.

I am looking for a software answere to the problem.
Of course it's possible to alter the keyboard wires or connections with a soldering iron but that would most probably annul the keyboard garantie and be a little messy
