40% off 710m, Worth it?

I am looking to buy a new laptop for college but can wait until about August. I have 2,000 to spend and I'd like atleast a 2ghz processor, 1gb ram and a 100GB harddrive with a 12in screen. I need a big hard drive because I am probably going to be editing film. I am beginning to consider the 14'' if they are cheaper but I'd really rather have a 12.

I have configured a 710m with these specs and I was wondering whether or not I should wait to get a laptop later and whether or not I will be able to afford what I want if I do wait. I am a little scared of the 1.7ghz processor and the truelife. The total price of this machine would be about 1,650.

Inspiron 710m Pentium Intel® Pentium® M Processor 735 (1.7GHz)
12.1 inch WXGA
Genuine Windows® XP Professional
1GB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
120GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
Combo/DVD+RW Drives 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy® ADVANCED HD Audio
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915 Internal Wireless (802.11 a/b/g, 54Mbps)
Microsoft Office Basic - Includes Word, Excel, and Outlook email
65 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
4yr Premium Solution Package

So...should I wait or take advantage of this offer and be stuck with a slightly inferior machine? Or will it even make a difference?

Any help would be awesome

when you play the dell coupon game you never know if there will be a better deal or not, thats the game that you play.

now you say that you will be doing video editing but did you know that the extreme graphics card that come with the notebook is less than dessirable for video editing, in part because it only has 64 mb of memory.

the 1.73 pm is a good processor and will do all of your need just fine, plus it is easy on battery power

i would get the smallest amout of ram form dell cause they are way overpriced and you can get better ram from aftermarket venders.

on one last note you say that you have been looking at 14inch notebooks, well what have you thought about the xps m140? it has a better gpu,the battery life is better, dont have to get truelife screen (i have it and like it though) and the price RIGHT NOW is so cheap (a system like you want would cost about 850-900). just a thought

I'll say wait because the newest 12" or 14" latops are coming soon!

you can play the ebay game atm. im in on a 710m ending today its still under $600 they usually top around $800 for the basic type and upgrading the ram is easy to do.

what do you mean by editing film? im by no means an expert on that but if its graphics intensive you would want to double check to make sure the onboard stuff will handle it

I say you should wait. Last christmas i configured the 700m
2.0 cpu
512memory
80 gig harddrive
8cell battery
3 year premium warranty with accidental damage and express tech support.

Plus they gave me a 128 memory usb drive for free and a free printer

All this came to $1170 out the door including tax and environment fee.

I meant if I get it now I'll probably be using it to edit a little, but not extensively because I have another computer for that. If not I am going to be using the much more powerful school computers.

And the problem for me with upgrading the ram etc is that I don't really have that much time on my hands, and probably won't until August, so I'd rather just pay a little extra and be done with it.

I think I will probably end up waiting, the only reason I was so keen on this deal is because it seems to difficult to find a 12" laptop around the 1500 price range.

Thanks

you can also look at MSI's 12" barebones systems/built ones depending on the route you go the can be fairly cheap(they offer centrino, turion and core duo solutions now). also there are 12" offered by averatec that are cheap or Acer has 2 series of 12" that can be had in your price range.

ultimately all will have integrated graphics and the best bang out of hose is the ati 200m but thats on amd notebooks only(that i've noticed correct me if im wrong) if they handle what you want just wait around for dell's newer 12" laptops to come should drop the price on a 710m nicely

On the surface it looks like a good deal. I am a shopping addict in some ways and am tempted. The only plus for the 710m compared to other notebooks is the size and weight. It's very small and must be easy on the back!

okay, didn't pull the trigger on this because the website didn't let me use both $50 off $799 DPA AND $50 Concession Coupon !!!! ... The CSR couldn't do it either...

The deals on 710M are CRAP right now... and I need one.. agh!
