Purchasing notebooks/dilemmas/need advice

Hi,

I will be purchasing a notebook soon, primarily for school purposes (Eg. Word document and surfing the net on campus) so therefore, my needs in a notebook is fairly basic since I will use my desktop when I am at home. I started researching a bit on notebooks about a month ago and I was told to hold off a bit because of new models with Core Duo. Well recently, I've seen a few notebooks that I quite like such as VGN FJ170B and VGN FS 810W. However, these two does not use Core Duo so therefore, it is a a bit cheaper. I am aware that the Core Duo enables one to run more applications at the same time and enhances the battery life. But it will also cost a bit more. I looked at the Sony site for notebooks with Core Duo and it is $1900+, which is over my budget. I guess my question is, with my basic needs, would it still be okay if I buy one that does not have Core Duo? or should I buy one with Core Duo since it will last longer in the long run?

I also heard that there will be a new processor out to support the upcoming Vista, and that Core Duo models notebook will have a price drop? If so, when exactly will this be and if includes Sony models.

Advices would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Based on that then a normal Pentium M Processor or AMD Processor for your laptop would be more than adequate . Your desktop is your main machine and that is the one you should be focussing your money and efforts to keep up to date .

Thank you for your input, zirconium!

I have another question regarding Celeron M vs Pentium M. I know Celeron M is the lower end processor. I saw a Vaio and the Pentium M was about $100 more expensive compared to the Celeron one. Here are the info:
Intel® Celeron® M Processor 370 (1.50GHz , 1MB L2 Cache)
Intel® Centrino® Mobile Technology Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73GHz , 2MB L2 Cache

Do you suggest I spend the extra $100 and purchase a Pentium M one instead of Celeron M?

Get the one with the pentium M, the pentium M supports speedstep while the Celeron M has speedstep disabled. This is especially important for battery life and since you're using this for school, I'd assume that battery life is a top priority.
