ATi Mobility Radeon 9700 (M11) article - Page 3

post #41 of 100
Well see , if you get your self a sager you'll probably find your self gaming on it more and more. I did.

Back to the topic at hand, the mobility 9700 is a nice card and a step in the right direction but I just didn't live up to the hype, then again what does

The only new resolution coming down the pike are the 1680x1020 (IIRC--it's on their site and I don't feel like checking ) 17" lg-phillips screens.

I would truly be suprised (pleasantly so) if the Sager has 17" WUXGA.
The test machine they used was most likely dell's much rumored new inspiron line...9100/XPS.

Is there a 17" screen on the XPS? Much as I hate to say it, I'd be much more likely to believe that Dell has early access to a WUXGA 17" than Clevo/Sager. I think that Dell was the only company shipping a WUXGA 15.4" for some time.

I just posted about this on the General notebook forum because its not from sager but you guys might want to take a look at this notebook.

As far as I know these new Inspirons will be 15.4" We probably won't see a 17" WUXGA from anyone for at least a few months.

Tomshardware are lame...

I used to swear by Toms, now I can barely stand to read them...

Not only have their reviews been reduced to no more than a couple of lines of text and 2 screenshots/graphs per page, but they are hardly insightful any more.

For example, on this page here it's talking about the PowerPlay feature and how it "finally works"...there's 2 graphs, one showing how much difference the various settings make to the FPS in Halo. If you can't be bothered looking it makes a huge difference. Then there's another graph showing how much difference the various settings make to the battery life of the laptop. The result? Bugger all! A total difference of 7 minutes between the performance setting and the power saving setting.

Any comment from Toms?

Of course not...

My apologies for the barely ontopic rant :>

I agree--rarely a reason to go there anymore. These days I use anandtech or hardocp or whoever. Toms was the best for years what happened to them?
post #49 of 100
I actually find anandtech and tom's reviews to be frequently incoherent and disorganized, sometimes with bad spelling/syntax.

It seems all three (hardocp, anandtech, and toms) have received an unnamed machine. Are they the same? Tom's got a P4 2.4 while anandtech got a p4 2.8. No word on what hardocp got.

Who do you recommend?

Extreme tech has another preview.
http://www.extremetech.com/

And a related nes article notes that the 9700 can access 256Mb of framebuffer memory--so maybe the 9700 w/256 isn't a figment of Sager's imagination.

* Discrete
* On-chip 64MB DDR (128-bit)
* On-chip 128MB DDR (128-bit)
the 64 / 128 are On-Chip, same type that we did not see on the current 9600

there is a Discrete on there too and it doesn't have a memory amount that means it can be the 9700's min ~ max setting depends on the ODMs
I'd missed the on-chip bit. DAMN...that's one large honkin chip if it's got 128MB in there...

Waaaa...more mystery about the unnamed machine. More configs.

extremetech got two machines? One with a 2.8 PRESCOTT? Could the one anandtech got be prescott as well? I am beginning to suspect that the black box would be Dell Inspiron XPS. 15.4inch WUXGA is certainly Dell's forte.

I didnt bother reading the thread, since i just found out, and i dont have time for 4 pages.

However, i cant say i am supprised. Like expected, it is a 9600XT and not a 9700,a nd the speed boost came from just the clock speed. However, if an upgrade is offered for the 5680, i will defonatly consider it....

Chris Hook (ATI) interview on M11.

Nothing super-new but still mildly interesting.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Dell on this one. It took a awhile for them to convert to the 9600 but seeing's now that they made the jump to ATI for their top of the lin GPU's I can't imagine a compelling reason to switch back to Nvidia at. WUXGA screen has Dell written all over it.

i think they have a little false advertising here over at http://www.go-l.com/home/index.htm But when you click on it in the article it has no mention of 256ddr.

check this pic out

L does a lot of "misprints". Specifically, for the Mobility Radeon 9700, they claim that it has GDDR2-M memory and OverDrive. Both of these features have been dropped by ATI and are not available on the M11. The 256mb is possible, however, since the M11 can come in a discrete package not containing any RAM. The 256mb VRAM is supplied by the notebook in that case.
post #58 of 100
Just a few things to note:

Firstly 256MB is nothing more than a cynical marketing ploy on a chipset like the mobility 9700, neither the GPU nor the memory is clocked high enough to make any difference.

Secondly the notebook in question is a Dell XPS, out in a week or so. It uses the same screen as the current Inspiron 8600 and is nothing special. Very nice in terms of pixel pitch and therefore sharpness, but nothing special otherwise. Certainly the Sony and Toshiba glossy screens are far superior. The comparison with the 64 MB 9600 is perfectly valid, since at the sort of resolutions the 9600 ( and quite frankly the 9700 too) is capable of running the latest games at (ie 1024 x 768) the extra 64MB is not an issue performance-wise. Given identical core and memory speeds, I doubt you'd see any difference whatsoever on 90% of games out there if you doubled the 9600's memory from 64 to 128MB.

That said, I think more and mroe future games would benefit from 128MB, so I'd prefer to have it if possible. But 256 on a relatively low performance part like the mobility 9700 is thoroughly pointless.

400 - 450 Mhz is not high enough?? Thats almost as high as the desktop equivalent!!

Of course the additional RAM makes a difference in this case - I think the RAM will be DDR400 spec.

From the interview:

"Using a 2.4GHz test-bed system, we have already achieved 3DMark03 scores well in excess of 3,000."

An overclocked dell 8600 with ati 9600 pro turbo gets about 3500 score in 3dmark03...

An overclocked ati 9600 pro turbo will perform just about as well as a mobility 9700 in my eyes.
