Is Alienware playing catch up?I always thought they were always ahead of the competion.Dell has a centrino with a 128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600 PRO Turbo card and 2 gigs of memory for there Centrino notebook. Now they have PentiumĀ® 4 Processor with HT Technology 3.4GHz Extreme Edition for there deasktop.I guess i'll wait to buy my notebook and sees whats next for alienware.Since iam going to be spending more then $3000 i want new top of the line.If not i might just go with dell and i hate to go that route casue i always wanted a Alienware.

Uh oh... now you did it. You just wait.. the mods are going to come and close this thread, since it is anti-Alienware. They are probably going to say your thread was going to go nowhere and become a flame war.
Or another excuse that I saw a mod using was that you should have posted this in another forum like the general forum...

LOL!

Actually to answer your question, you are somewhat correct... Dell does usually get to introduce new tech a few weeks before Alienware (and most other manufacturers). Part of the reason is because they are Dell... it's goo to be the biggest.

That said, there is also a reason that there are so many complaints about the shoddy installation of components on many Dell laptops, and that their systems are considered good general systems, but Voodoo, Sager, and Alienware are considered the top performers.

Consider it a Ying and Yang of computer manufacturing

First post, hey

I've been looking for a widescreen, or maybe sager, alienware, or voodoo.

voodoo is so much $$, I can't believe it. I would love to get one of those though

the Sager widescreen gets too hot(4780) and doesn't come with uxga. Maybe the 8790 will be something nice.

Alienware is lovely, but again, $$.

I had it down to alienware and dell 8600 with wuxga. I had to choose dell, simply because for $2150 I can get widescreen and nearly everything else, minus 2G ram. I think 1G should be fine. It's also got 7200 60Gig and DVD-RW 4x.

No intentions of badmouthing alienware. They are great, and the proccessor is definately more serious than my 8600. I also need battery life, which the 8600 should do fine at. It's really what do you need it for???

Alienware, Sager, and other boutique PC makers do not play catch up with Dell. It took months for Dell to come out with the ATI 9600 for the 8600 model (the competition had up to a 3 month head start). Dell still uses slower memory (2700 vs 3200), and a dated Northbridge/Southbridge mobo chipset. As far as Centrino, you are comparing apples and oranges. While the Centrino is definitely a nice CPU, Alienware, Sager, etc cater to the extreme desktop replacement community. This offers the highest level of performance with some slight (heat, weight, battery time) setbacks. No way a Centrino 1.7 outclocks an Alienware 3.2 or 3.4 Ghz Northwood. In the very near future, Alienware and Sager should release the ATI mobility 9700. I would like to see how many months it takes Dell to get on that ball.

it depends on the component... some stuff Dell does get quicker. Just a fact... and yeah they were offering the NVIDIA 5650 before AW, can't remember about the ATI, but I know that a few other large vendors were offering it a least a month before AW.

And AW IS SLOW with a lot of stuff... it's something complained about around hee often.

And who said that Dell beat AW in speed? Save for one article I read back a year or so ago, Dell always gets trounced
post #11 of 29
I'd take Alienware's 'slow' to Dell's 'fast' anyday.

Fact is, AW likes to intensely test their systems and components, and it is for this reason that they're 'slow.'

Dell's 'fast' typically results in what was related above, i.e., shoddy component installation, etc.

You get what you pay for, bud.

well...

actually you'll pay more for a dell lappy with a similar configuration. They like to lure you in with a low initial cost and then gouge you.

AW just seems high from the get-go, then you find that changing components (RAM, HD, etc.) are usually a lot cheaper.

But yeah, as I said, Dell has quality issues that are far worse than those of AW

Iam sticking with Alienware .....Iam on phase 4 and going to chg the specs abit. Will it slown down my my order since its at the start of the building process?

The reason my younger brother has a Dell:

He's stupid and doesn't need much in the way of performance... plus he is confident in the brand.

The reason I have an AW:

I want performance, the warranty is good for the price, and I know enough to stay the hell away from Dell.

Is it true the 3.2GHz P4 only gets like a 10 - 15% gain over a 1.7GHz Pentium M? If so, I'd much rather have the M and the much longer battery life.

Its yin and ying

haha, not really. The 8600 came out to $1980 shipped. The alienware I was looking at, I priced out without the DVD-RW or the the wuxga. It's the 15.4" wxga. It came out to $2390 shipped. I must say, not that bad of a price. Also, the 8600 has 4 year warranty, AW has 1 year, for those prices.

Now, I'm stuck again in turmoil. I haven't bought the 8600 yet. I was going to buy today, but thanks to all you guys, I can't make up my mind.

I will research more about the AW laptop, and I've also been looking at hypersonic and voodoo. Voodoo came out to $3100 wihile the hypersonic came out to $2650.

I'd rather not spend too much, but I want a nice computer. I'll be using it for downloading music, playing games, running Reason 2.5 (music program), Internet, and overseas operations. Basically, I'm gonna use it for almost everything I can.

Battery life is somewhat of a concern. I don't want a battery that lasts 1 hour, so if I do go with AW, I'm getting the 2.8 processor.

Any thoughts, I can 't decide

i just priced the 8600 at $2,940:

1.7ghz/60gb hdd/1 gb ram(2x512)/dvdRW/ati 128

the price isnt much less than a 51m with similar specs.

plus dell doesn offer upgradable graphics cards.

Also, one more thing....anyone have any thoughts about the AW widescreen 15.4" vs the dell widescreen 15.4"??

They both look great.

*update* I noticed the specs for size of those two laptops. The 8600 is 1 14.2" wide by 10.8" deep. The AW is 13.8" wide by 11.4" deep. Most likely, the AW is a little less widescreen, but a little taller. Now onto other concerns. How is the screen quality of AW's 15.4" sxga? It probably won't be as great as the 1900x1200 wuxga on the dell, but I'm sure I could live with both of those screens. The screen is a big deal to me. I am infactuated with widescreens, and don't plan on going all out for power.

If I do get the AW, it'll be with the slowest processor. Does anyone have comments on battery life for the AW laptops with 2.8 processor? Also, it won't let me select cyborg green for the 51M in 15.4 sxga. I'm dissapointed.

your going to get terrible battery life on any of the p4 processors in the 51m's.... but great performance, thast the tradeoff
