Dell.... - Page 2

Sorry. I forgot to mention I also priced the 8600 with 1.5 processor. I can see how you got to $2900, but if you do it again, you'll see that you can get to 1980 with the 1.5 processor, and 256 ram. Of course, I'm just going to get 1G memory as soon as the computer is on it's way.

So any thoughts on battery, heat, RELIABILITY? I have to use it for going to asia, and for everything else. I've always loved AW. I've heard horror stories of wrong parts installed, but I've heard that with EVERYONE. I'm sure AW does extensive testing, and I'm sure their computers have a lower ratio of faliure than dell.

I'd be willing to spend $2500 bucks, maybe even a tad more. I can't be running on 1-1.5 hours battery all the time though. Otherwise, the rest I could live with, as long as the screen is good on the AW 15.4 sxga.

Thanks!! hmmm, the turmoil.

I'm sure your 51m is extremely tiresome on the battery, but what do you think I could get out of one set-up similarly to yours, but with the 2.8 instead of 3.2? Also, I'm stuck between 5400rpm and 7200rpm. Will the 5400rpm suffice? I don't need the utmost fastest.

again, thanks.

the 7200 is faster, but you can play games on the 5400 fine with no performance drops at all.

as far as the 2.8 and the 3.2... again the 3.2 is fast but 2.8 should be fine for any gaming you'd be doing... a p4 2.8 is stilla kick ass porcessor...
you couldg ow ith the 3.0 instead there inst much difference performance wise from 3.0 to 3.2.... i'd probably go with 3.0 but i have the extra cashs o why not irght?

I think as long as you get the 1 GB of RAM you should be very pleasd with the performance....

even with 2.8 and 5400 you should be pretty happy.

also i have read alot of the complaints about AW's support but as far as i have seen theyhave been extremely helpful.

thanks. very helpful and simple reply.

I am leaning more and more towards something other than the Dell 8600. I'm really liking the looks of the widescreen 51M....more research is needed.

I have concluded that it is definately possible to get 2 hours battery life with the AW 51M with 2.8 processor. Now, in order to calm my worries, I could just get a secondary battery, and be able to meet 4+ hours battery life for airplanes etc...

What's left?? The widescreen alienware doesn't come with WUXGA. Really, how much of a difference is there going to be from the sxga to the wuxga??

I want to run reason, and this involves having a lot of open windows on the screen, viewing side-by-side documents etc...The 1900x1200 wuxga from dell sounds so nice, but I'm sure AW has a high quality screen for their widescreen.

i havent seen the 51m widescreen so ic an't say off hand but if you read the posts, the people with that modela re VERY happy with that screen...

1900X1200 holy blindness!!! im not sure i could stare at that for too long....

as for battery life yes you can get 2 hours outof thebattey, especialy if you arent gaming the whole time.

i guess it all depends onw hat you are going to be doing and what your personal "needs" are... but i think both the dell and 51m are good machines.

As far as the 1.7 centrino only having 15% performance loss vs 3.2 P4, I'd say that it's all relative. The way I look at it, the P4 is still draining battery much faster, so it must be doing something a lot faster. That doesn't mean that the 1.7 centrino won't be able to handle any current game, or do whatever you need to do.

Yup, the dell 8600 comes with 1920x1200 to be exact. I'm trying to get more pics of the 15.4" alienware widescreen. I'm sure I could live without that 1920x1200, but it sounds nice

Yeh i have the 15.4 widescreen. I was a little worriebd because i heard bad things with it and trying to run games and it also did look a little small to me. when i opened it up for the first time however AMAZING. the screen is bigger than i had ever immagined and i can play every game i want to just fine. its definitly a good screen.

Uh-huh...

Which is why I ended up just pricing a Dell that was nearly $500 more for a comprably equipped AW, not including the fact that the AW had the 3 year warranty included, whereas the Dell did not?

I have to get you to buy Dell for me in the future
