Gateway M505X CPU upgrade?

I know the M505X is ancient by now, but I am still loving mine and was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the CPU? Maybe a 2.1Ghz Intel 765 with 2MB cache and 400MHz FSB?

Does anyone know if the CPU is actually soldered on or socketed?

And finally, has anything like this been attempted before?

Too bad that Gateway/eMachines is so poor in technical information. One must always go around and check the specs using other "relative" system.
Gateway M505x is pretty much the same as Gigabyte N601 - as in m6805 and Targa 811 and ... - so according to the specs on the Gigabyte, it can handle Pentium M and Dothan CPUs up to 1.8GHz

I have yet heard any centrino CPU being soldered onto the board.

cheers ...

Honestly the M505 is the best system I have ever owned. I am ready to kick myself in the head for selling it on ebay. Trying searching google I believe I saw an upgrade article for the M505. If I find it I will post it as well.

My only reservation is taking the laptop apart... I don't want to mess up the excellent build quality.

I wonder if 1.8Ghz was simply the fastest CPU out at the time. Is there any reason why the 2.1Ghz CPU won't work? It appears to have the same voltage/TDP spec.

One thing about the M505x that I don't like is the aggressive fan, which kicks in for a second or three every couple seconds.

well 1.8ghz centrino is well over the normal 2.++ ghz system
anything that is above the "recommended" supported cpu speed, one must be paying attention to chipset/bios/mobo specs details. u can always give it a shot :-)
i can share ur concern when taking the lappy apart. until this day i know only hp/compaq which offers almost always a service guide with their product, aloowing the brave souls to tinkle inside the box. w/o a service guide, i'd be reluctant myself to open the box - that why it is so cool with this eMachines forum since we are pretty much "nutso" in creating our own "service/upgrade" guide. hat off to all members!

cheers ...

My M505X is 21 months of daily 12+ hour use and it is still perfect ...

I see no reason to upgrade to a better processor.
with 1 gig of high quality memory this baby flys
with anything I do. DVDs 4+ hours a day
Runs FEAR and DOOM 3 and Quake 4 and FarCry
amazingly well. Am hoping it will run STALKER next year

well, it exists always some crazy dudes (and dudesses) like myself - per example - who'd just like to see how far we can stretch the performance of the machine ;-)

cheers ...

Yeah I don't think I am willing to sacrifice build quality for some minor performance bump that's already slow by today's standard anyway. You really should go up to 2 GB if possible, definitely helps the laptop stay off the HD as much as possible.

I kinda got ripped and got the screen with slow response time. It was even worse than the Dell inspiron 8000 it replaced... but oh well, what can you do.

have been gone from the forums for a while, but my m505x is still running perfectly...I've ran it to death and it still has the original os...haven't had to reformat but probably will soon just to freshen things up a bit.....i was wondering if you m505x owners have seen anything similar to it in terms of quality and bang for your buck? My sister needs a laptop and I'm going to find her something good....just curious...

as far as the cpu upgrade, a while back someone mentioned something about it being soldered to the socket but I'm not sure...I would be nice though but not worth the risk...

I'm contemplating on upgrading to a bigger hard drive though....
