8204 Success?

Acer had my 8204 for a week + a day and it seems to be fixed. I sent it in for repair because of the buzzing sound and they replaced the Mainboard. I've spent the past hour with the Catalyst 3D Preview (set for Performance) running on the right side of the screen, and knocking over some Tokamak blocks on the left side of the screen. No buzzing yet, and yes the system is running off AC.

I'm still unsure what to do about the LCD. I have zero stuck/dead pixels, but the bottom right corner is very dark (I haven't decided whether or not this bothers me).

Set Catalyst for quality then - it's more demanding setting. I can get buzzing using ATI Tools preview screen also and even dragging windows and files sometimes (?)... But to be honest, it's to quiet to bother me in this moment. Did you check if you have dark color noise?

Ok. The laptop ran as stated in the OP for about 5 hours but hard-locked when I tried adjusting the Catalyst 3D Preview to "Quality". After a reboot I now have the Preview at Quality setting running on the right side of the screen, Tokamak running on the left side of the screen, Irfanview open with a black photo, and an Explorer window open. I have dragged the windows all over the desktop and have let it run for another 45 min or so. The only noise emitted from the system is the fan, which can be quite loud at times, but definately no audible buzzing.

What abou thte "noise" in the dark colours and shadows in the graphics and videos? DO you get any? It looks like a grain on a camera film. If you have the LTN screen (which is known by the dark corners) you also have the grey lines, dont ya?

Hey 137, you really just oughta settle in with your Compaq and give it a break. Move on, it's the past now. Same to the Grey Lineman.

George Harrison put it pretty well: "I don't need no wah-wah".

I am discussing the ATI performance which is common for other notebooks. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. Maybe a sticker - ONLY FOR ACER 8204 OWNERS should be placed over this forum.

thanks

Welp, I watched the first half of Underworld (very dark movie) on the 8204 last night and did not notice any "noise" or artifacts, however its quite possible that my eyesight is not nearly as accute as others. I also played Oblivion for about 3 hours. The performance was great, but the fan is louder than what I'm used to and the hot air blowing on my mousing hand is annoying.

I think I might wipe and reinstall as I'm unhappy with the Acer supplied software and would like to start out fresh.

137: you're saying other manufacturers have the same buzzing issues with their x1600 implementations?

Edit: Also, I do indeed have the LTN screen and according to the .gif that was posted in another thread it suffers from the grey lines, however I've never noticed them.

That's ok, 137. Please accept my apology for being a grouch.

No problem man, I am trying to help, but if I am sarcastic, I do apologize. 8204 just did not succeed in my case, but I still am running TM803 right now which is doing great service to me.

Civbat: I have seen the HP nx9420 and ran the Tokamak there. Yes if I put my ear close to the keyboard I could hear some silent buzzing. It is the one equipped with X1600 with 256 dicrete memory. I was also running Tokamak on my old TM803 LCi equipped with Radeon 9000 and while running Tokamak I can hear the buzz. To be perfectly frank, in both cases it is audible only when looking for it particularly and when very close to the unit.

The nosie might be actually a driver/setting thing, because I was watching some video where EXACTLY the same effect like this noise was put in!! So it might be kind of filetr or something there! This is mystery so far, but the buzzing is natural up to certain point I would say. Tokamak is very demandive on graphic cards performance and some machines even freeze rahter then running it!

The LTN screen has the grey lines, but some of them reproduce them extremely visible, some of them the way you would never tell. The QDI screen is however without them. On the other hand, I have philips screen which failed the test but passed al lother NOKIA tests and has no grey lines whatsoever, so the gif is not a measure for me.

I have had four 8204 and all of them got stućj pixel and all three types of screens. As for me personally none of them was good.
But again - I am maybe too too picky, and when I look around, there is hardly a better screen with such resolution! On the other hand, the noise was extremely visible and annoying in my last notebook. The QDI screen reroduces it a veeeeeery contrast way. So basically you musta be lucky to get completely issue free unit, if possible so.

cheers
