If you were considering the 7900 gs, consider this... - Page 2

post #21 of 64
Yeah, I want to know if the 7900GTX will fit without any modifications too? Or will it be like the 9300 + 7800 mod where you had to stick in a new heatsink and all?

I dont wanna lose my 3 year warranty
post #22 of 64
As for 7900GTX fitment in a 9400, I see lil proof that it won't fit - OTHER THAN having to snip the metal at the left rear vent on the chassis so the left heatpipe will fit. And the only other thing will probably be a hacked XPSm1710 BIOS that will flash onto the 9400 without question or issue.

22w is very impressive for that performance. it's basically a higher clocked more effecient 7800gt (desktop card)

Another question, will I need to buy the 9-cell (or bigger powerbrick at that?) if I intend to install the 7900GS into my Inspiron 9400?

I used HL2 as an example because it is a SM3 game that makes use of HDR. However, a better example would have been Oblivion. That said, you get great results because you don't use HDR. I will be, and I do care about what the video card can do with HDR in WUXGA resolution.

With Oblivion you have draw distances to the horizon, HDR, and the ability to tweak the ini file to increase the texture quality draw distances.

The post was intended to highlight the difference between the GS and GTX versions, not assess the performance demands of HL2. I apologize for any confusion.

HL2 isn't an SM3.0 game, non SM3.0 cards like the X800s can run HDR on it.

I have spoken to Dell's tech support, and they have told me that the 7900 GS will fit in the e1705. Now that can lead you to believe the 7900 GTX should fit also with no modifications since the XPS 1710 takes both the 7900 GS and 7900 GTX cards and hopefully these cards are the same size and screw into the system the same, just probably different cooling solutions (7900 GS probably has 1 heatsink fin like the 7800 and 7900 GTX has 2 like the 7800 GTX). We are just going to have to wait till someone can get the part and install it to confirm all of our speculation.

Same question...

any time frame!?!? I will be leaving the country in 3-4 weeks and would like to boost the performance before I go!! Also, if you are just doing regular work or watching DVD's, will the battery life decrease with the better video card even though you aren't driving the card as hard as if you were playing games?
post #28 of 64
yes, a big powerfl vid card uses more power just sitting there than does a smaller weaker one... an x1400 will use less power than a 7900 under all circumstances. (exceptions for similar performance with process change: e.g. 7800 vanilla is slower than 7900GS and 7900GS will use less power)

I can't wait, i got my 2 gigs of RAM, just need to replace the 7800 go with a 7900 GTX.

HDR in 16 bit floating Point mode? I thought HDR16 was a SM3 spec?

There are a couple different flavours of HDR. SM2 cards may be running the older versions of HDR. Feel free to correct me. I am no expert and may have gotten wires crossed. However, I had thought that the latest and greatest HDR (with the most impressive effects) were SM3 spec.

The paper specs always show only one thing. Peeps love numbers. On average real time performance does not come close to what is on paper. Lets wait till we get some 7900(GS/GTX) systems in our group and reserve the % speculations till then.

None of the charts show us any real information except the pipes, because I can pretty much tell you the bandwidth of my 7800Go is is not what is on that data sheet just because Dell underclocked. The data sheet for the 7800go basically say the 7800Go and GTX gets 35.2GB/s mem bandwidth.

My go is only running at 470Mhz thats only 256X470X2/8 = 30080 ==> 30GB/s
The GTX guys I saw on the o/c thread are getting 38.4 @ 600Mhz

Anything less than 1100Mhz on the 7800go means it is even less than those posted white papers.

Actual numbers > whitepapers and tables

Basically for those of you who are too lazy to decipher the chart

1st = 7900 GTX 512MB/Quadro 2500 512MB
2nd = 7800 GTX 256MB
3rd = 7900 GS 256MB

and so on.

Is there a...

256MB version of the 7900GTX? If so, where does it fall in the rankings?

7900GS will not require a battery or brick upgrade. 22w is nothing compared to the 60w that the 7800Go pulls in them right now, you'll be fine.

Due to the low thermal generation of the 7900GS, it will only use one heatpipe (right side), while the 7900GTX will use both left and right heatpipes - which currently the 9400 requires a lil snipping to open up the left heatpipe vent. 7900GS will drop right in, 7900GTX will take just a lil modding.

How much extra battery life will we get from upgrading to 7900 then?

Strange that extremetech lists 7800GTX at 40W...

In some settings the 7900GS is actually as fast as the 7800GTX, 3Dmark05/06 seems to be the place where 7800GTX has the biggest lead, but in games the race is much closer. Considering the batterylife-gain from 7900GS over 7800GTX, the 7900GS is the winner.

I this test the sattelite P105 has the 7900GS:

Considering the cpu is a tad slower in the toshiba, I would say the gpus perform equal, except for batterylife.

sorry for the random question, but is the 7900gtx dx10 compatible?
