New to Mac

post #1 of 11

I week ago I purchased a new mac mini, and it just arrived. I am amazed at how it works. After installing OS X on my laptop, I wanted to get the full effect. I brought the Mac Mini. I have not installed any software it came with Ilife preinstalled and office, but the demo of office.

I would like to get the programs that I used the most on XP and replace them on the mac. Such as Outlook, dvd decrypter. Nero, Opera, Fair Use, and mesenger clients that allow web cam capabilities.

I know there is a version of Opera out for the Mac I installed it and it works well.

Do I need Anti Virus, Spyware?

Can someone recommend some programs to get that would be best on the Mac?

I opted to get the Mini Duo, and damn is it fast.

Dual core is really a nice thing to have, one of those things you dont reallize you need until you finally have it.

I'm new to Mac as well, and from the research I've performed, you don't need any Spyware and Anti-virus software.

A substitute for:

Outlook = Mail
Nero = Toast
Messenger = Adium
...not sure what dvd decrypter or fair use does and am too lazy to look it up

But, some other apps you might want to get are:

Butler - quick launch program
USB Overdrive - customize mice
UnrarX - unraring program
Witch - windows alt-tab for mac
MacJanitor - system cleanup app
...can't think of any others right now.

Thanks guys I will be looking to get some of these programs.

Dvd Decrypter and Fairuse are used to rip dvd's and turn dvd's into Avi files.

No, it isn't just a minor upgrade, it is a major release so you'll have to purchase it.

oh, that's free, just use the software update and it will be taken care of. i prefer to download the files from apple and save them in case of issues down the road.

anything within the 10.4 family (10.4.1, 10.4.3, etc) is part of the same OS iteration. it's when 10.5 rolls out that u'll be in the next major revision of the OS and have to pay.
