Adding a Hard Drive

Hello all,

I am going to add a second hard drive to my 8886 laptop. I am wanting to place it in the second CD drive bay under the Sony Memory Stick slot. I have recently bought a 10 gig 4200 RPM 2.5 inch. HD ($30) from a friend of mine who took it out of his HP notebook. It's an IBM Travelstar with a standard notebook mini IDE connector on it. It dosn't have a power connector so I assume that it retrieves the power thru the cable.

I have another friend that is going to give me some brackets for a notebook HD. They are made to adapt from a notebook CD sized opening to 2.5 inch notebook hard drive. I have lots of experience dealing with desktop machines but very little with notebooks and I have a couple of questions.

1. Will I void my warrenty installing this drive?
2. Will I need some type of cable adaptor to plug it in to the HD controller?
3. Is there a standard bracket that will make a notebook HD fit in a notebook CD bay or do I need the Sager 8886 bracket?

Thanks.

You need the bracket. The bracket also comes with the adapter to put a 9.5mm drive into and install in the system. No, it should not void your warranty unless you damage it by adding it.

Also, you may want to check on the jumper settings as well... I'm pretty sure notebook hard drives have them as well and it could mess things up if you set it to master :-)
