Any News on Ferrari 500X series:

I was wondering if you Acer ownes have heard anything recently regarding the state of the Ferrari line; what's the approximate timeline for the arrival of the new machines.

It looks likely that I may be upgrading in the next couple of months, if there are compelling reasons out there. If Ferrari arrives shortly with Turion X2, then that would be such a reason, and Ferraris would be just int he right price range for me. If not, I will wait another 6-8months.

So does anyone here have a good idea on when Acer is planning for the new top of the line notebooks?

Thanks in advance.

It will be announce after AMD's official launch of the mobile X2 on May 9th. Shipment late May early June most probably. Spec will be almost identical to the 8204 except for the CPU but I don't know if they will clock the X1600 higher like they did on the F4005.

Thanks, that's the kind of news that I want to hear; so they are on the ball this time, it seems.

But does this also mean that all the problems with the 8204 will also come with the new Ferrari?

It seems everyone is just repeating the story originating from HKEPC so I have no idea if it's true or not. But If AMD is late, then the F5000 will be too. Figure 2 to 4 weeks after AMD starts shipping.

Intel is set to cut prices on all their duo-core models on May 28th because of the Turion X2's. So I imagine they'll be out before that.

I think the confusion is the Socket AM2 dual core desktop parts which are slated for late may apperently, and the Socket S1 dual cores for mobile use, which the Turion X2 will launch on, it's possible they will have seperate release dates.

Anyways anyone know anything about the Radeon X1700? I have a feeling we may well see a mobile version of it, which would be sweet because it would almost litteraly be 2 X1600's stuck together. however it looks like it may be some months off and if that is the case I am worried that companys may not want to refresh for it. Apperently it's going to be an opticaly shrunk .80nm part in Q3. Though when the Merom based laptops come out I bet they sport the mobile version of it if there is one which I assume there will be.

Do the 400x series have the same type of screen brightness problems as Travelmate 8204 and such ?

I own a Ferrari 4002 which has the glossy type screen (1280 x 800 res). The screen is OK if not beautiful, at least for me. Once I saw a 4003, the screen was the same with my 4002. Don't know about the 4005 though since it has the matte type screen with a higher res.

4005 has 1680x1050! Very good screen! No problems!

I have a 4005, the screen is nice and sharp, although I think they could have made it a bit brighter.

Perhaps I've been reading overclockers.com too often, but I'd be willing to bet we won't see a new ferrari until the aug/sept. Acer doesn't seem all that prompt about adopting new amd procs and then there is the issue of which chipset to go with. The last part assumes that nvidia does in fact get theirs taped out and in production soon.

If I had to guess the specs of the new Ferrari this would be it:

15.4" Screen
Turion X2 2.2 GHz
2 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1700 256 MB
160 GB Hard Drive @ 5400 RPM

$2399.99 USD

Wrong. No X1700 and no 160GB HD, 2.2GHz X2 is doubtful but possible.

I think it was a good guess based on the fact that they haven't said anything yet, lol. There's no way they're gonna put the X1600 in there, and if they do well then they took the cheap way out and they better overclock it. The ferrari series usually 1-ups the latest travelmate, and considering the last travelmate had a 2 GHz Duo Core, I would expect to see a 2 GHz or 2.2 GHz Turion X2. As for the video card, using the X1700 would be a wise choice. But, I guess we won't know anything for sure until Acer tells us, still though, it's fun to wish

It's just not in the cards. I've seen the design spec already. The only thing open is which CPU they will put in, guess it would depends a lot on availability at launch.
