Less than three weeks until Computex Taipei... (19 days)

Wish I knew when Acer would make their new announcement(s?) so I didn't have to keep checking a dozen websites a day.

I don't know if Pioneer have them in stock ready to deliver but if they do it would be the first time we get something in Australia so quick. We always have to wait months after you guys get all the good stuff!

I doubt Pioneer has stock yet, they're just grabbing for headlines with an early announcement.

They weren't the first anyway, though. I hadn't realised it at the time, but Micro Star International (MSI) were first out the gate with their MSI S271, also known as the MS-1058 in barebones form.

The next one's been announced today. Evesham Micro, a British PC vendor, has announced their first Turion 64 X2 mobile offering - the Quest A230:

Pricing is 799 pounds, about the equivalent of US$1499.

Well, we're now basically a week after the AMD announcement, and still not a whisper from Acer. Wish they'd just announce the thing already, so I could compare specs with the 8204 and decide which I'm buying...

Wiz33, any update?

Just did a little digging myself to try to guess a date. Here's what I came up with:

* Ferrari 3000 was announced Monday October 13th 2003
* Announcement happened the day after the last race of the F1 2003 season, the Japanese Grand Prix, Friday October 10th - Sunday October 12th 2003

* Ferrari 4000 was announced Friday May 27th 2005
* Computex 2005 was Tuesday May 31st – Saturday June 4th, 2005
* The last F1 race before Computex 2005 was the European Grand Prix, Friday May 27th - Sunday May 29th 2005

So... It seems to me that Acer management likes to be symbolic with their Acer Ferrari announcement dates, timing them on the weekdays right around F1 Grand Prix weekends for the best possible publicity.

* Computex 2006 is Tuesday June 6th - Saturday June 10th 2006
* The last F1 race before Computex 2006 is the Monaco Grand Prix, Thursday May 25th - Sunday May 28th, 2006 (Monaco doesn't allow cars to run on Friday, so practice is moved to Thursday)
* Ferrari aren't leading the championship, nor is the season ending, and there's no certainty of them winning the race, so announcing after the weekend doesn't make sense as the announcement might get no coverage if Ferrari lose
* Announcing on Friday doesn't make sense since there's no track running, you get an extra day's publicity by announcing early, and you avoid problems with deadlines for news media in Asia who would be going home / to print by the time a Friday European announcement was made

Other than Wiz33, I've not seen anybody definitively state that the new Ferrari is about to be announced - Acer's AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile-based Computex announcement(s) could be new Aspire / Travelmate notebooks. Assuming Wiz33 is right though, I see two distinct possibilities.

Most likely, if there's a new Acer Ferrari laptop coming, it will be announced alongside this weekend's race - and sometime in the morning (Monaco time) of May 25th makes the most sense to me.

If the laptop isn't announced at the Grand Prix weekend, it makes more sense to hold it until almost the last moment of Computex starting to make sure the news is still fresh as the show starts. If that's the case, I'd aim to announce in the morning (Taiwan time) of June 2nd - giving you time to get into the weekend papers before the show starts, but making sure your announcement is still fresh but not lost in the last minute rush of news.

So - to sum up, look for one of the following if I'm right:

* New Ferrari notebook on May 25th
* New Ferrari notebook on June 2nd
* No new Ferrari notebook for Computex, just Aspire / Travelmate notebooks

Good research, my Ferrari 4000 was announced on my birthday last year . Let's hope those days don't pass without a Ferrari announcement .

I was told that the engineering sample should be here soon so I'll let you guys know when it shows up. As for formal announcement, it may be at Computex.

Great news, thanks. I'm waiting with baited breath for the new Ferrari, which is basically the only thing stopping me buying an 8204 right now. If there's anything you can share with us here (or by private message), it'd be most helpful in making my purchase decision.

I myself is waiting for the final shipping spec on the F5000 to make a choice, The design spec I saw was pretty close to the 8204. I'm just waiting to see if the X1600 will be clock any higher (if so any heat problem) and the battery life of the unit with the Mobile X2 as compare to the 8204.

I'll let you guys know once I get the final spec.

Wiz33, how detailed are the final specs you get? I was wondering if they tell you which wifi chipsets these use? I'm a linux user, so I'd be very interested if they switched from bcm4318 to something with better driver support (atheros).

I don't recall offhand which Wifi chipset it uses, I'll call my Contact and see if I can dig that out.

Any chance you could get them to give you an idea of the embargo date on it as well? If it is within the next couple of weeks, the date's probably already set in stone - and if it is further away than that, I may just give up and get the 8204...

Acer show the first pics of Ferrari 5000 series!

Turion64 X2 + X1600 256MB + 256 Hypermemory + HD Momentus 5400.3 160GB + HD-DVD drive!!!

There is also a compact 12,1'' called Ferrari 1000.

AWESOME !!! I'm selling my 4005 to my sister and getting this one. Maybe I'll wait until the second batch and let some of you guinea pigs test the first batch, lol.

Ha! So I was off by two days.

Shame Ferrari became a laughing stock in the meantime, thanks to Michael Schumacher's cheating.

Wiz33 seems to have been spot on - the spec looks to be identical to the 8204WLMI so far, just with a different processor. Also interesting that they're expanding the line to two models, with a compact 12.1" LCD model based on the Radeon Xpress 1150 as well. Wonder if that means there will be a non-Ferrari version of that laptop in the line also, in the same way as the 8204WLMI and Ferrari 5000 are the same except for the processors?

What cheating!? I didn't hear anything about schumi cheating.

Taken from here

http://www.formula1.com/race/news/4430/757.html

"Michael Schumacher has been moved to the back of the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix after stewards concluded that he deliberately blocked the track in the closing stages of qualifying, preventing rivals from beating his time."
