That's odd. I've reinstalled on mine and have no problems whatsoever.

Check your BIOS settings. I can't think of where but somewhere I'm almost positive you can adjust settings for your hard drive. Off, Silent, or Performance or something similar to that.

Notebook Hardware Control has settings that control the sound of the hard drive, try that. http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm

ok so i started to study were the noise is coming from and it turns out that it is coming from the fan, what is wierd is that the fan was not this loud before. it turned on and vented heat but not as loud as it does now. i did the bios flash update on the dell website. changed from A03 to A04, does the bios control the cpu voltage cause i sware that my volt was 1.5 before the install on the os and the bios flash and now it is .98-1.35 and changes between those two volt readings.

could this make my fan run louder some how and make the cpu run hotter?

nah fan is either off, low, or high. bios doesnt adjust it much more.

its not always right at 2500 rpm for low, but its always close.

my fan is louder than new, but its on 10hrs a day, maybe a new one for me.

When you did the reinstall of the OS and drivers, did you install the drivers in this order?

1. O/S (duh)
2. Notebook System Software
3. Chipset
4. Video Driver
5. Sound Driver
6. Lan Driver
7. Everything else (Direct x, etc)

The Notebook System Software MUST be installed BEFORE any other driver for your system to work properly. Hope this helps ya out.

wow so i put in my system tools and drivers cd from dell and it does an auto find for all the drivers that you need. well i scroll down and look though them all and guess what is not checked, the notebook system software. so i installed it and restarted and already i can have to core voltage go up and not have the fan kick on and the temps are still 43-44 C so i am happy about this. if i could get the cpu down into the 38C range them im set

It makes no difference whether you install NSS before chipset, or NSS after chipset. As long as those are the first two, you're fine.

Actually, it does make a difference....The system software helps prepare the system before putting in the chipset. PLUS, doing this first ensures proper installement of any driver (DELL or Non-DELL) without hiccups. I've tried with the system software after and before and it does do things differently (i.e. HDD noise, Temps, etc). I have actually seen first hand actual DELL documentation from DELL engineers that even advise this to have the Call technicians do this order when a customer requests help on re-installing their O/S and drivers after a reformat.

When most people blow out their partitions and do a clean install things look fine, but will later find problems with their system later (temps, BSOD, System cashes) and naturally assume that the hardware is garbage but in most cases all it took was the system software to be loaded FIRST. This also applies to desktop models as well. The system software makes a big difference. I know it doesn't make sense, but remember what the NSS does - it installs updates and core files PRIOR to installing DELL's files.

Glad I could help BTW, to get your CPU core temp down, I would recommend taking out the thermal tin that DELL uses and apply Arctic Silver 5 or your favorite thermal paste instead. It should reduce the temps by at least 5 degrees celsius depending on what you are doing with your machine.

Go to Dell's Driver & Downloads page for the drivers. Near the bottom of the driver list you'll see:

System and Configuration Utilities

Expand it. For notebooks it's called: Dell Notebook System Software
