That may have been the case back in the early days, but not any more.... More and more people are either replacing their desk tops with laptops as their main (and even only) computer, or starting out with a laptop right off....
In the early days, laptops were a lot more expensive than a desk top and did not have near the same capabilities, so a laptop was mainly a secondary unit.
But today, laptops come with just as much punch as a desk top with the added benifit of portability. Almost like having your cake and eating it too.
You can even buy a larger screen and regular keyboard so when at home you imply plug the laptop into these add ons and use it just like a desk top.
I am giving serious consideration to replacing my old Dell Demension 2400 with a newer Dell E1705 laptop. Still in the early research stages right now...
