Performance Delay, Software issues?

My machine is a Asus Z81Sp,
3.2 GHz P4, LGA 775
512 MB Corsair DDR2 (next thing to be upgraded..)
60 GB toshiba HD / 16MB cache (ATA )
nVidia 6800 GO on a MXM type 3 slot.
Windows XP SP2

My problem is when I load any game or application, (Doom 3, CoD 2, Adobe Premiere) there is a 10-60 second lag before the machine does any real work.... That is I think that there is some type of power saving software running... After the machine "realizes" that I want it to do some real work the fans really kick on and it flies! However threre are very annoying, and dissapointing performance issues, when Loading FPS games you can't really play the first 60 seconds, now this might be beacuse of the 512MB of RAM isn't enough for all the textures, but even at lower quality and resolution settings there is a noticable delay in performance.

Any thoughts on XP mods to increase performance from a laptop? Or are there any Applications to force the High Performance Modes?

Ive already checked the BIOS and Set the nVidia Powermizer settings to Max....

Im not quite sure what the performance effects of DAS (Display Adapter Scaling) are on the actual gameplay, I didn't notice any real differences in Load times or framerate.

DAS OPTIONS

DAS ON

DAS OFF

DOOM 3 Settings

Here is where all the loud noises come from when this baby does some real work! This is the input filter for the P4, if you look close you can see the copper heatsink.

Any help increasing the performance of this machine is greatly appreciated! This is the first DTR laptop I've ever worked with... and my last laptop was a Magnitronic 20MHZ, 25MBHD 2MB RAM, with a deluxe Monocolor LCD!

Is your hard drive set to go to sleep? If so it could be the delay of the hard drive spinning up once it realizes you want to do something. That's my best guess.

No all my ACPI configurations are set to always on, no screen saver or HD poweroff timers....

It could also be something with the operating system, when is the last time you reinstalled?
