Monitor won't display

I recently hooked my CRT from my desktop to my laptop, just to check it out. But then when I hooked my CRT back to the tower it won't display anything. When you first turn it on, the light is green, but after a few seconds it turns to amber because it isn't getting the signal. I did play with the settings on my laptop when I had the CRT hooked up to it, but I didn't think that messing with that would change anything with my CRT to make it not work on my desktop. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Turn off the tower, plug in the monitor and then turn the tower back on.

do you have a video card? Maybe it defaulted to your untegrated video?

My desktop is an old compaq with a 8 mb TNT2 card. If that is the problem what would I need to change.

You can try reseating the video card and reset the motherboard BIOS. TNT2's have nack for going out unexpectedly. If reseating the card doesn't help then you need a new video card or motherboard with integrated video. That video card has to be coming up on seven years. That's a long time for a card that puts out a bit of heat.

I reseated the vid card, but don't know what you mean about reset the mobo bios. But reseating the card didn't help. It seems weird that the card would just go out like that at that same exact time that I used it on the laptop.

Put it in another PCI slot. If that doesn't work then you need to get another video card to swap in place of the bad one. Get another cheap PCI video card on ebay or something.

It's an AGP card so I don't have an extra slot that I can try it in. Dang, why do I get stuck dumping money in a 6 year old comp. Thanks, if anyone can think of anything else that may be the prob I'm willing to try it. Because it will prolly take a while for me to get around to getting another vid card. And thanks mobile.

Well if the lights and hard drive come on then i would think the motherboard and cpu are probably ok. But you really can't go any further without a PCI video card. You can get another AGP card if you want. There are some cheapies out there as well. I just keep a PCI video card around for troubleshooting like any A+ tech should have. Honestly if it's too much of a hastle and you have the cash then go for a new system. I would also check the voltage on the CMOS battery. It should be 3 volts. They last about 10 years but you never know.

Check the pins of the VGA connector to make sure non are bent.

by reset the BIOS, he meant jumper the pins on the motherboard that clear the settings.

O, lol, don't know much about the jumpers on the mobo. But, I got a dif pci card from a buddy and it still didn't work. So I tried what I should have tried in the first place and hooked my CRT back to my laptop and messed with the settings some more. My CRT was still enabled on my laptop even though it was no longer hooked up to it. So I disabled it and I don't think that there were any other changes that I made, but it now works again hooked to my tower. Who the heck knows. Oh well. THANKS for all of your help!! It's much appreciated, have a great day!!
