Affordable Gaming Computer - toshiba?

I'm a Canadian student in search of a laptop. My budget is around 1800-2200, though keep in mind that if a computer is sold at costco, I can get it for around 600-800 dollars less than the listed price because i know someone who sells costco computers which have been returned, but still work just fine.

The computer I have now was a qosmio g-10, 1.8 centrino, 1 gig of ram, and a 128 5700 NVidia. I plan on selling it because it's broken down twice now, though both times it has been under warentey. It was a recall issue, problem with the motherboard, so, I still am willing to come back to toshiba as they are supposed to be the best, and apart from that the quality was just fine.

I am looking for a computer which can play the latest games, preferably duo core. Desktop replacement is fine. Weight is not really an issue (as i took my g10 17inch 9.7 pound mamoth to my classes anyways), though battery life I would prefer to be no less than 2 hours, preferably 2 1/2. I understand i make sacrifices here though.

Really, I was very much excited when i saw the stats for the american P-105 921. It seemed to be exactly what i wanted, and only 7.7 pounds to boot, and it had that 7900 nvidia card!!. Unfortunately, the canadian p-100 JR5 version only comes with a 256 Nvidia 7300 which i'm not pleased with at all. I don't think that will suit my needs Will toshiba be launching any veriations?

My question really is, whether there's a suitable computer within the toshiba line for my needs, and within this price range. The new qosmio g-30 is very nice, but more expensive than i want to go.? Are there other particular brands i should be looking at? Are there other comparable computers in this field and that is sold in canada?

im a student too, university in canada....

but athat aside, what type of games are you looking at playing and what sort of settings are you wanting.... as it sits with your budget as low as it is for a gaming machine and toshibas lineup what it is (assuming no changes) that will really determine if i would recomend a toshiba model or another brand.

your price, and the settings you want to play at are really the limits of your request....

How about the Qosmio F20 XG1? thats the laptop i plan to get. It has a lot of nice features liek a Nvidia 6800 go, 1gb mem, 2ghz centrino cpu, 100gb hard drive, VERY nice screen, and a bunch of other good stuff.
the F20 candian model is great to get, plus costco has it.

Well, like i said, if it's sold at costco, i save 1000+ dollars on it by buying it used (ie. someone bought it for a week or two, didn't like it, returned it and it's essentially brand new still), which is really what enables me to jump to a higher level, even with that price range.

I bought my g10 qosmio a year ago for 2300 when it was retailing at 3500. Costco sells toshibas, dells, hp's, some vaios.. But really... none really look to have decent graphics cards in them asside from toshibas really!!!

http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Common/Ca...e=BCCA&topnav=

What I want is for my computer to stay competitive for at least a year for games, and can at least run on medium settings etc... I'd like decently high settings, but I'm the type of person who likes no lag, and can settle for semi-lower graphics if i have to - but that's why i'm upgrading. I don't have any particular games in mind.. My g-10 can play BF2 though it occasionally lags. If i'm going to buy a new one though, i want the capability to play the new games coming out over the next year, with decently high graphics.

The toshiba P100-JRF I can get for 1750 and retails for around 2600 after taxes, but it only has that nvidia go7300...

So my questions are:

1) Will i really be 'upgrading' if i buy the p100 with ony a 7300 card? Is it a good deal or am I wasting my time? The f-20 would be nice, but will it stay competitive in the future with only a 6800 card? Should I simply wait for something to come around in my price point with a card in the 7000's?

2) Is there another comparable brand with decent stats asside from costco computers?? The dell insperions at costco all only have that X1400's.. If i go with another brand not sold at costco, i lose that bit of edge in price point, as well as resale value. Is there still anything competitive out there?

3) Essentially, should i simply just wait... and hope toshiba brings something like the p-105 921 to canada in a few months from now?? That is my 'prime' what i would have wanted, with that 7900 GS, 7.7 pounds.. Perfect comp.

I know i'm being pretty picky, and perhaps my request is impossible with the constraints and price limits. I appreciate people taking the time to apply. I could pick up a qosmio g-30 which would fit the bill, but would cost me 2700, and it's simply more computer than I need. I don't take full advantage of my g-10's multimedia systems as it is, so i was looking for an affordable gaming computer comprimise. I don't have a credit card yet, and i'm not particularly keen on ordering online, if it can be avoided.

Well thanks if you can help very much! If i'm being unrealistic, let me know too as that is valuable as well. Thanks again!

the 7300 isnt really much of an upgrade if any at all.... its a low end card for the 7xxx series from nvidia and just doesnt have the power to really handle the hard gaming you are wanting to do. the f20 only has a 6600 which should be okay for what mid-high settings on todays games but over the course of the year, especially with what is coming out you will likely end up having to lower the settings. to do high settings and at mid settings still a year from now start yourself with the 256mb 6800, or something in that region. sadly nothing you can get at costco will do for that short of toshiba releasing a new model.

not really.... there just isnt much left out there that has the kind of graphics power you want with good quality in your price range. if you could work your contact and get maybe a dell 9300 (single core) or the 9400 (dual core) really cheap through your contact you could likely upgrade the graphics yourself for ~$450 give or take a bit to the 7800gtx if you got a 9300 or just a plain 7800 if you got the 9400. this however is a bit of a gray area when it comes to warranty and would kill any that you had. still though its your best bet to get the power you want at a price your willing to pay. the downside is you likely wont have a warranty...

you want what alot of people want, but as it sits with your budget its a hard thing to find.... the g30 if your not using the media capabilities of it is more of a machine than you will need in many senses but in gaming it will not completely meet your needs.

BTW: just curious what are you taking? what university/college?

Thanks very much Fidget for the detailed response. Knowing i'm not going to find anything with these criteria is just as useful recommending a computer model. I'm a bit short on funds atm to justify paying substantial amounts more, so i will wait and be satisfied with my g-10 on low graphics. Grrr.

Right now, I live in Vancouver. I'm going to UBC, and just finished first year and applied to transfer to UBC's BCom program. Where i'm actually going to be going, I'm not sure yet I have another interesting offer from Univeristy of Victoria to join their business program and skip a year to go to 3rd year directly to get my degree in 3 years. But yes, I'm aiming for commerce and business related degree! And yourself?

One idea some people have recommended but i'm not really 'down with' is to go the desktop/laptop route. Buy a decent desktop with processing power for the gaming end. And then buy a seperate piece of crap celeron with battery life for taking notes in classes. I've sort of gotten addicted to this type of performance and mobility, however. Will I end up hating myself?

I dont think so, every year, game requirements go up and to play the newest games, its going to require better and better video cards. Getting a decent desktop, you will be able to change vid cards easier and cheaper than going out every year or so and updating a 3 grand laptop

right now im just finished my second year and am going into my third year of a double major history and politcal science in the fall.... UofA though for me.

i have gone completely mobile and i would have a hard time going back myself. i game mostly on my m170 and usually i take my alienware with me to classes and use it for notes and such. i personally wouldnt go the desktop /laptop route but thats because i prefer to keep myself mobile and so i can game on the go. though it is true that the desktop route is easier and generally cheaper to upgrade and keep up with the latest in gaming power, especially in terms of graphics.

well dell isnt selling them anymore so it comes down to the people who already own them selling them.... and honestly they are still going for a relatively high amount since they are still prettymuch top of the line.

when it comes to laptops im in a slightly unusual position for a student but thats because i have been rather lucky and have managed to get my way into the laptop industry which leads me to things like having the machines i do... but that said i wouldnt be parting with my m170 any time soon unless i was made a very good offer, just as im sure alot of people who have them would be hesitant to part with theirs.

I love my M65-S9092, and now that they seem to be discontinued, they've dropped in price big time! 1299.95 USD at best buy. 17", P.M.760, 1024mbs DDR2, X600SE 128. Decent rig for a decent price. I can assure you it games rather well. I wrote a review of the machine a little over a month ago, posted in the toshiba reviews forums.
