My M1710 has arrived!!!!! Pictures inside!!! - Page 8

If we assume 1 in 100 laptops have a problem, and take a week or repair time, that means dell takes 1week/100laptops to make sure problems are fixed. If they tested them all to their fullest, it would take 100weeks/100laptops which is alot alot less effecient for dell. The reason we can get many laptops for so cheap is because of dells effeciency, even if it means returning it a time or even two I still saved 2000 bucks over compareable laptops from other makers.

acutally, what I was saying was that you'd probably not like them to keep it in testing for a week (which currently it looks like it's a day at most and that's mainly to install software, not to really test them). not that they shouldn't test them at all. And that sucks that they all are doing that because that's what is coming in my M90. Good thing I rarely use wireless then .

Mine that will be here tomorrow has the Dell (Broadcom) card, not the Intel wireless. I'll be eager to see if I have any such problems. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

How about some more Oblivion details if you don't mind...

There is no perfect wireless card, period. I switched to an Intel card on my E1705 because I couldn't connect to a particular Westell wireless router that I need to... it's a known incompatibility.

The Intel card has been perfect for me, using it at 5 different wireless sites, some open, some using LEAP, one using a really specific authentication type/procedure.

It's not Dell's problem, it's just the fact that there are hundreds or wireless cards, hundreds of WAPs and millions of consumers -- most of whom don't know enough to troubleshoot and blame the hardware...

It'll be interesting to see how the Intel card does in my M1710 that should arrive tomorrow!

How do I test the frame rate in Oblivion? I am playing at the highest resolution with all the highest setting and would like to see what my framerate is.

Ok I figured out how to display frame rate. I played the first part at the very highest resolution and settings (except hdr) and was averaging 20 fps. I would go down to about 14-20 sometimes and would go up to 30-40 other times (fighting in first part was 18fps). The game seemed very playable and looked beautiful but I can see the I would have major slowdowns outdoors. I am by no means an expert anymore as I have been away from the gaming scene for a while so I am just putting this preliminary information out because nobody else on this forum has theirs yet, I can't wait until one of the experts gets one cranking.

i think its important to really tweak oblivion and once its tweaked, it looks awesome from what I read. I would probably want to run it at 1280 by 768 or something similar to 720p even though its not your native. I would try that with HDR and it would look great. Its all about configing the .ini file to tweak this game.

And you wonder why you have negative rep.

Here's a thought: Instead of saying someone's opinion or idea is stupid, maybe you should just say "I disagree" and then explain why.

Trust me, you'll get much farther.

Indeed! Tweaking the ini is where the eye candy can take a quantum leap over the 360 for Oblivion. I am going to be trying things both ways. When I get my 1710 I will be uninstalling all crap and scrubbing everything down to minimal processes. I am not bothered by the extra partition and want to try things in the installed OS first. Registry and service management can do wonders. And then there is finding the right video driver. The stock drivers have been pushing out approx. 8500 on Mark05. However, it may be a while before newer drivers provide that needed boost to the 7900. Then of course there is OC'ing the video card. Then I will be running OB with max settings in native res w/o HDR. Then I will turn on HDR and see what I res I can comfortably run it at. After that I will start .ini tweaking. I will likely use the windowed mode and full screen when I scale down in resolution and see how each version fares. Some of the screenshots following .ini tweaks look absolutely stunning! OMG - Just a couple of days to go people. My 1710 is shipping and ETA is this Wednesday!!!

we will have to compare notes and OC's. I would like to find a nice stable 24/7. I think these will have some good headroom.

I agree, but I'm not overclocking mine. As long as this runs all my games smooth and full res, all effects, I am happy..

Yup. Agreed. Fortunately I have been playing OB on the 360 since release. So, when I get the 1710 I will be able to focus on the machine first, and tweaking it just right. Then I will dig into games like OB. OC'ing is a long slow art. It has been a couple of years since I needed to care (when I built my last system). However, whilst Dell's are generally capped for OCing it would seem that the vid card is exempt. I don't want to fry this baby, but I would like to make her work a little harder for my money. Question - ATI cards have ATITool where you get to see the visual graphic showing you quality of speed clocking. Does NVidia have an equivilent? Gotta love that fuzzy cube.

I understand.

My driving force is that I want to tweak the high texture draw distances in OB. The one thing that OB does get me down on in the 360 version is that after 30 feet everything looks grainy. Water reflections in the distance are just plain block-nasty!

And then there are the mods...oh yes...the mods... *drools*

Both have links to more 'realistic' mods, like natural enviroments, better weather, etc. They make the game feel more real, and look impressive.

There are also other mods, that make Oblivion itself feel realistic. Some mods have packs of wolves attack you, instead of a single one, or, more random attacks by beggars or muggers, who just want to rob you.

A few of my favorites are 'Attack and Hide', enabling you to attack someone or steal from them, and then hide, a la Metal Gear Solid. If you're hid long enough, the guards will stop searching for you. Another I use is 'No Psychic Guards', which in turn makes it so when you attack or steal from someone, guards just don't 'magically' appear, and unless the victim yells, and is heard by a guard, then no action is taken, however the victim may attack you now, and has a better chance to do so.

Search around. It's worth it.

I just bought Oblivion for my E1705 and I have to tell you I dont know what everyone was talking about it running like crap on it. I played it on 3 different levels, the default auto detect option puts the res at 1024x768 with all graphical options maxed, and it was just awesome, then I did 1440X900 again no problems, then the default res of 1920x1200 and the only thing I needed to do there is just turn down a couple of little settings because the mouse was lagged, and still kept HDR set and most of the draw distance and it still played pretty smooth. I imagine, it runs very well on the 7900... But I am very happy with it on the 7800 go so far very very impressed with the games looks and feel, it is quite amazing actually how nice it is...

The game itself is kinda quirky, but it takes gettin used too I guess. I am not a fan of 3rd person view without targetting... =) But I do like stealthing and popping arrows in someones noggin for x3 crits =)

Thanx. You are forgetting about tweakguides as well. The psychic guards mod is interesting. On the 360 I played a thief through to guild master and never had this problem. I am not so sure I will need this mod. But we shall see. Maybe the PC version does something different with stealth. Funny thing is, I think people may be missing the fact that stealth is what dictates if you get sprung by a guard. Now that I have stealth at 100 I can steal a bow from under a shopkeepers nose and get away with it. It all comes down to if that eye is golden or not, and that's down to your stealth ability.
