This guy took his mac book pro apart and look at what he found!

So is it their thermal compound they use that make it hot(ter?)? Wonder how much it changed when he used AS5.
would be cool for someone to track their temps before and after.

I wonder if it's worth it to open the computer and risk voiding the warranty to put AS on.

I wonder how much it would help PPC PowerBooks too.

hmm

yeah I been looking and I can't find no indication on if it made things better. I am going to keep checking though this might be why the mother boards are being replaced they probably reallized that to much Thermal compound does more harm than good. Instead of it getting rid of the heat, when there is too much it actualy hurts.

I really would like to see if this made his Mac book run cooler.

I just found this article and it supposedly makes things a lot cooler.

Has pics of the temp before and after reapplication of thermal paste. But, I'm be reading some good and bad things about this, so I would be cautious if planning on doing this.

What are the bad things you have read? I have seen predominantly good things....there is some concern about voiding your warranty, but that ship does not seem to have docked yet. It seems to lower temps of the case pretty nicely, but I am still reading. There appears to be much discussion on this topic. I'd like to know how it affects the x1600 when OC'ing on the XP side, since this has been a topic on onmac.net since Bootcamp came out.

Amazing...

I'm amazed Apple actually uses thermal paste rather than the cheapo thermal "pads" used by most vendors. But in this case the pad would probably put less goop between the chipand the heatpipe and probably work better, lol.

well, the sources may not be reliable, but some say that instead of dissappating the heat through the case, the cores are taking much of the heat and can damage them. But people counter that by saying that person doesn't know what they are talking about. A lot of people say that it helps. Still unsure whether or not it voids the warranty.

I've been reading the articles for the past 24 hours or so.....I can't say I favor one camp over the other; both bring up good points. It would seem to follow, at least as we know it in the desktop model, that if the fans are running more, it is b/c of greater heat dissipation from CPU core(s) to heatsink, esp if we are taking the fact that one of the thermal sensors lies on the heatpipe. If this is the case & the heatsink is taking the brunt of the heat dissipation work, vs. the casing taking it, then I would expect a greater benefit to overall CPU health. Now, apparently Apple designed the case to take some of the heat dissipation. I suspect that this was designed more as a "safety net," rather than something more of a primary cooling solution (but I am just some schmoe living in his own dream world). This is Apple's first go w/ Intel & also w/ Intel's dual-core architecture, so perhaps there is a bit of R&D that did not get adequately addressed. Also, as described, it could be related to faulty machining at the factory (assembly line?). I still am not 100% ready to open my MBP. But, I'm considering it.....

aha! some numbers...

"Some MacBook users had cried that their computer was running at just over 50 Degrees Celsius. But once a better thermal paste replaced the silicon, temperatures dropped to roughly human body temperatures, some 35 to 39 Degrees Celsius."
