Hi there, I managed to successfully create and envoke a new ghost image for the Dell System Restore following the tutorial provided by PcGeek04. All the procedure worked beautifully!

Thanx for this wonderful thread.

I have a question, hope I am not becoming a pain:

If I were to take some space from my C: and transfer it to my 4th primary partition and then install VISTA on it. Would I still be able to use the DSR of the XP on the 2nd partition?

Maybe I am getting way ahead of my skills, but I was just thinking of giving VISTA a try without deleting my XP.

Just came across this thread.I own 3 Dell's, all desktops.A 8200 and 2 9150's.Maybe i missed it somewhere but can i make ctrl-f11 work on the 8200?It didn't have this originally but it would be nice if i could make it myself. It's my daughters pc so she messes around with it alot.Would save me a great deal of work each time i have to fix it! (reinstall that is!).
I'm going to try to get it to work on my own 9150, it came with the restore function, but had raid 0, i changed it to non raid because it suited me better (Dual boot XP/Vista) and now my restore image and partition is gone.I did backup the original image but it's full of preinstalled stuff i don't want.
But i would really like to know if it is possible on a pc which didn't have it originally.

P.S.
I also own a Inspiron 8000, would be nice to add this function to that one also!

Free copy of Ghost 10 after rebate! Ends at midnite tonight.

Now is the time to get a free copy of Ghost 10 which comes with Ghost 2003, before they're gone. Frys.com has a $50 rebate that ends at midnite tonight. Ghost 11 is rumored to drop Ghost 2003, which means that you will no longer be able to buy a new copy of 2003 when the Ghost 10 copies are all gone.

Got the whole stuff to work on my daughters Dimension 8200 except for 1 thing. After i restore my custom image, Ctrl-F11 works, (Dimension 8200 originally didn't have the resore function) you have to reboot. After reboot it loads pbr 1 and says "invalid system disk".
I've tried it with the original files, my wife's pc still has the resore function so i can borrow some stuff from hers.No luck, tried it with the sys files from an old Win 98 boot disk, no luck either, tried it with the sys files from a Win XP boot disk no luck either. All the right files are on the DellUtility partition, it's the first and fat16.All the right files are on the DellRestore partition, its third and fat32.
DSRFIX reports that everything is oke, The disk types are oke if you check them with Ptedit.
What could still be wrong?

Fixed it! Made an image of the Utility partititon from my wife's pc and now it's working like a charm!

How can I copy Dell Recovery parttition to another computer?
The way i did it was simple, download dsrfix from Gooddell's site.Burn iso or make bootfloppy.Boot pc from where the partition should come from with the floppy/cd.Run ptedit.Make both the Utility and Restore partition visible.Boot into Windows. Now make images of both partitions.Boot from floppy/cd again and hide both partitions again. This pc is original again.
On the target pc do the following:
If its empty, make 3 primary partitions with your favourite partition manager.
First partiton about 40-50 megs, second what you like, third partition between 3-10 gig, depending on the amount of software you install before making your own custom restore image.
Install Windows to the second partition along with any software you like and Ghost 2003.
Make an image of the Windows partition, you can save it to the third partition. When booted back into Windows, copy or move image to the second partition.
Restore the Utility partition from the image you made of the other pc to the first partition.
Do the same with the Restore partition but then ofcourse to the third partition.
Now boot the dsrfix floppy/cd and run ptedit and change the disktypes to DE and DB.
Run dsrfix and fix any problems.
If it still isn't working you may need to run the mbr program from Goodell's site.
I got it working this way on a Dell 8200, and i'm now trying to get it working on a non Dell laptop, a Fujitsu, and it's looking promising!

I've got an Inspion9400 with 4 partitions default - diag, c:, restore, media Direct. i want to delete the c: partition, make two partitions for vista+XP in its place, and then place a new image of my drive onto the restore partition. Is this possible?

Will DSR have a problem with 5 partitions - restore on the fourth partition?

Gonna see if i also can get it to work on my wife's Inspiron 8000, can't be that hard i think.

Another thing i would really like to try is a dual boot with XP\Vista each on it's own disk (desktop pc, 2 sata disks) but also with the restore function for XP and for Vista, the thing is that i don't exactly know whats on the Vista restore partition cause i haven't got a Dell with Vista pre installed. So if anyone could tell me whats on it exactly (printscreen something like that? ;-) )

Got my system going with my custom restore image using:

XP Disk managent for partitioning,
A Ghost Boot CD I got somewhere (Radified I think) for the imaging.
DSRFIX and PTEDIT CD from Goodells

Starting off I had 5 partitions - Diag, C:, Backup, Restore, HPA Media Direct.

Now I've got 5 partitions - Diag, C:, DATA, Restore, HPA Media Direct.

Followed the guide more or less without any problems. The longest part was building up the windows installation for imaging

I want to do this on another non-Dell machine minus the Diagnostics and Media Direct . Does anyone know how to disable/get rid of the Dell EULA screen?
If you look at Goodell's site about the Dell Utility partition, the sealed state ( http://www.goodells.net/dellutility/sealed.htm ), you will find that the Dell Eula screen is nothing more than a bitmap in the Dell directory on the Utility partition.I haven't tried it but to me it seems if you change the bitmap to a bitmap of your choice (logo of the non Dell brand pc perhaps?) with the same pixel size, 256 colors and filename you will have your own Eula!

Thanks for the help gombal.
Did you remove any unneeded files off the diag partition when installing on the Fujitsu and try and make that partition smaller?
No, the harddisk is 6 gb, so i made a partition of 49 mb for the Utility partition, could be a bit smaller because there's only about 6,5 mb of files on it but.Because i could only gain a few mb's i didn't even think it was worth trying.(I actually didn't even thought about it till just now when i read your question :-))
The Restore partition size depends on the size of the OS image, in my case it's about 1,2 gig so the partition i made is about 1250 mb cause the size of the restore files is about 7,5 mb.So that leaves me 6 gig minus 1300mb is 4.7 gig for the second partition, the OS partition. And since i don't do anything serious with the Fujitsu, it's just for fun/testing stuff i'm not so interested in saving space, especially not because today's harddisks have so much space and the files are only a few mb.The only place to win space is the Restore partition, save the image with best compression and make the partition just a fraction bigger than the image.

Hello everyone.

I have a dell XPSm1210.

Something has gone terribly wrong. All my partitions are intact I am trying to do a Dell System Restore Cntrl+f11. The menu comes up, and it asks me to confirm after that it tells me... Message: A GeneralException occurred Error Number: (36000). And then DSR asks me to reboot.

I used PTEDIT to go in there manually and use recover.exe and the same error comes up. I am pretty sure something is messed up with the symantec recover program if I am getting these errors. I am stuck and I really want to do a recovery, can anyone else share some ideas, on how I can get Ghost to work, please.
Thank you.
