Line across screen on my i9300

Augh! What is wrong with my LCD display?

There is a white line across the screen about a few pixels wide. The line matches the border of the windows taskbar, I think. Since it doesn't show up in screenshots, this might be a hardware issue. Can someone confirm this? It's a weekend and I won't be able to contact Dell till Monday.

Pardon the poor quality images. I don't have my digicam with me right now.

i have that same exact thing as well on my 9300. i think the bulb burned the taskbar into the screen. i'm using the windows xp royale theme as well.

it only shows if i'm playing a game with a bright background. oh well. not a big deal.

I guess it's time to call Dell for a replacement LCD. Darnit, I thought the burning issue was solved years ago.

Does it occur during the POST?

Yeah. The line is there immediately after I turn on the power.

Anyway, what are the procedures (I'm going through Dell's website right now. Can't find any info yet though) to send back the laptop for repairs since it is still under warranty? And typically, how long will it take for them to fix such a problem? Any ideas?

It's a hardware issue, either your video card or your screen. Sounds like your screen to me.

Sigh, I guess so. Most likely it is the screen since the line does look like LCD burning to me.

If it occured only in Windows, it could have possibly been a software issue, but the screen caps and the BIOS POST proves that it's hardware.

Here's to hoping you have a warranty....

Please don't yell at me for resurrecting a dead thread... but I searched around, and this seems to match the same problem I have had for the past couple of months. A thin vertical white line down the screen of my 17" XPS2 (UXGA).

Was a solution ever found for this? Do I need a new screen?

I had an XPS gen 2 also and my screen had a 1 pixel vert. line down close to the center of the screen. They replaced the lcd and it lasted about a week then a 3" vert line (black) went down it. They promised the next lcd would be better but it wasn't it failed also so they replaced the video card and that did nothing either. IMO it was the LCD but I had some bad luck and got other "refurbished" ones that failed also. Maybe it was excessive heat, I don't know, but Dell finally replaced the whole laptop and that solved it. All in all they did a gd job responding. The failure seemed to be in the replacement parts or not finding the over heat issue.

Arrgh! Same thing happened to me recently, a few months after the 1 year warranty was up.

The problem was the screen and a new screen cost my boss over $700 (not me, heh...)

I found cheaper offers, including Dell, but none with a 1 year warranty which I feel is minimal. And I replaced the screen myself, using the very adequate online Dell repair manual.

My threads about it here on NBF:
