In my opinion.

A great deal of the updates are probly useless but there are real issues and bugs that get fixed, with automatic updates it is easy so why not. I have never even considered to not do updates.

And you might see if there's a spelling and grammar update available...

When I suggested you download "security" updates, I actually should have said "critical" updates. The others that are available may or may not apply to you. Also, you can configure your machine as derekmac pointed out, to automatically download all updates. Personally, I don't care for that method, but the advantage with that plan is that you won't miss an update you should download.

i think they're useless unless they're the ones for your video card...

well i certainly wouldnt say they're useless. Keeping hackers out of your computer probably is a good idea. It doesnt hurt to do them, so i would do them.

Generally speaking, you're taking a far larger risk by not updating Windows than you are by updating Windows. Every once in a while a Windows update will break something - but you're far more likely to damage your OS through security exploits.

Just enable automatic updates. Set it to automatically download the updates, but to manually install them. That way your computer won't randomly reboot itself when installing updates.

I have owned 2 computers (gateway/dell) and during the entire 4-5 years that I owned them, I rarely to never updated windows. I have never had any problems with attacks of any sort be it malicious or benign. Only time I have had any problem is when my son has tried to do "something cool" to the system. I believe it is a waste of time to even bother with the updates. But in reality, what can it hurt?

I've never updated my OS, and i've been using comps back since 286's and 386's... Truth is, I dont even bother with an Antivirus anymore. In my opinion, if you need to use an Antivirus 24/7, you're a "n00b". Only reason why you'd need all that security crap is if you don't know what you're clicking. Once you learn to use a computer you sorta know which links are spyware and which aren't, or which downloads have viruses or are clean..

I've had ZoneAlarm running for almost 2 years without any security upgrades and had no one attack me, so i decided this security stuff is BS and that "no one's out to get you".

I guess download the "critical" ones if you really think someone is out to hack you and steal your shit.

I clicked "Hell no" to M$ because it sounds good but seriously you really should, use automatic update unless you got an illegal copy...

The question is....why would anyone not do it.

There are virus's that dont require any clicks on your part.
And guys like you who dont use anti virus because they think they dont have any are one of the reasons other ppl catch virus's.
