Some are security fixes. Some correct bugs. Some add features.

critical yes, drivers NO!

Download the security/critical updates, but DO NOT...I repeat, DO NOT download device driver updates from Microsoft. I work as a computer tech and on several occasions (last one was 2 weeks ago) a driver update competely screwed up a windows install. These PC's were set to automatically download and install update without any input from the user.

If you want to download driver updates, get them from either the manufacturer of the device or the manufacturer of the PC.

I disable updates completely and manually check every couple months.

i always downloaded the updates (only criticals) until having problems with them. after the third time, I became mad and only installed SPs. Having a firewall here and on the router helps. At least if my computers breaks I can only blame myself, and that I can handle.

I just get them all...critical and optional. Piece of mind I guess.
