M6810/7510GX upgrade

Hey guys,

I currently own an Emachines m6810 laptop that i purchased about two years ago. During that time I have experienced the typical problems associated with this laptop (cracked hinges, etc).

However, now I'm experiencing something new - some sort of weird problem which causes the laptop to completely hang, as if the system itself is losing power, but the LCD isn't (it stays lit up, but all sorts of weird lines appear around it). After spending a week or so diagnosing the problem, it now seems that, basically, the video/mobo is shot to hell (judging by similar problems that I have had on desktop machines).

Well anyhoo, soon thereafter I brought it in to Best Buy, gave them a rundown of the problem, yada-yada, and asked them to have it serviced under the three-year warranty. I told them that it was almost certainly a video/motherboard problem, which they seemed to write down, then told me that they'd get back to me after they have had a chance to look at it. Three days later they called and said that, in all likelyhood, it's a problem with the power connector itself (when they tested it it was apparently hanging when they plugged the ac adapter into the machine, which I didn't really know about), or a problem with (as I said) the mobo. They said that they were sending it out for service, and that it'd get back in 3-6 weeks. Sort of frustrating, but if they could fix the problem then hey, I'm cool with it.

Fast forward over a month later. I get a call from their service department telling me that the laptop is done, so I immediately rush over to BB to pick it up. When I got there, they proceeded to tell me that it was a BAD BATTERY that was causing the problem. My buddy (who I showed the problem to initially) and I were just standing there like "what the f***??", but I said "um... okay... that's weird, but I GUESS it's possible", signed the paperwork, and headed out. I then brought it home, put it through it's paces, and low and behold, I'm still having the EXACT same problem. It took them SIX WEEKS to ATTEMPT to diagnose the problem, change a battery, and they STILL got it wrong.

At this point I'm pretty much just saying "screw it, I'm through dealing with the Geek Squad". And thus, I don't care if I void the warranty anymore, I'm ready to service the laptop myself.

So yeah, where I'm headed is this: I can get a pretty good deal for the chassis+motherboard for a Gateway 7510gx. Now, if I were to go this route and buy this setup, would I be able to swap the keyboard, monitor, ram, cpu, and disk/cdrom drives from the m6810 into the gateway? To my knowledge they are based on the same arima platform, so theoretically everything should fit in the right place, but are there any differences between stuff like, say, the monitor connectors, that I should know about? Would the newer board work with the CPU, fans, and ram from the older machine? Any information/advice/suggestions would be appreciated, cause I can't really afford to be without this laptop for six more weeks.

Thanks,
Will

cool - looks like the thread has 2 systems to play with, yours and the other from Eunix :-)
well, i personally believe that u would have NO issue with installing the 7510x board into ur 6810 skin and using its peripheries. Both machines are physically (twin) exact. Chipset drivers and bios probably will be different.

If u r about to dump ur defect 6810 mobo, would like to take (buy) it from u, just to want to experiment the removal/installation (unsoldering/soldering) of ATI grahic card.

cheers ...

Yumb 7510gx motherboard will work just fine. I actually did that and am typing off the laptop I replaced the motherboard with the 7510 one.

qhn you will have no luck unsoldering the ATI GPU off. Also, I think the problem lies with the RAM. The GPU does not have feet like a CPU does, but instead it sits on small pins made of SOLDER. In order to get the GPU off I used a paint stripper tool because it heat up all the feet, thus allowing the GPU chip to come off. BUT once I got that out, I was unable to solder another GPU on... I didn't really do a good job taking the gpu off actually... and I had 3 broken motherboards laying around... all without the same results .

Brib3 - thx for the info. that was what i heard, just really want to satisfy my curiosity. u happen to take any pic of ur "unfortunate" trials? :-)
i got a hand on a targa "dead" mobo, but i believe that the gpu is still breathing - so if i can just (wishful thinking) swap the items

cheers ...

Keep in mind, you will also be soldering through a multi layer PCB. With all the solder points, if it it were possible to be done without robotics, the results would likely not be repeatable.

Well, just in case anybody was wondering what my video problems looked like, here it is.

http://i1.tinypic.com/wvrcxh.jpg

The lines and distortion shown in this screenshot is pretty much identical to the patterns that would appear on the screen when it would freeze up before I sent it in for service, but now it looks like this ALL OF THE TIME. Tried plugging a monitor into the back of it to see if it would display the same patterns, and it did. If this problem isn't video card-related, then I'm Neil Armstrong.

Seriously, is there any possible chance that this ISN'T a hardware problem? Seems pretty obvious, doesn't it? Unfortunatly, however, the cause of the problem isn't quite so clear to the Best Buy's "technicians" (sic.)...

It absolutely surprised me that I was able prtscr this, but hey, there you go...

So yeah, I'll give it another go with the service people at Best Buy, now that I can actually show them what's wrong with it (as the problem was occuring pretty randomly and without any sort of warning up until, um, 20 minutes ago, so I didn't have much to show them at the time, lol). Maybe this time when I tell them that it's a hardware problem, they will actually listen to me...

That looks very indicative of a VRAM problem, which of course is not replaceable. You should get a whole new MB out of it.
