I dunno if this will help, for the intel wifi I had to update the firmware in lib/firmware, card got picked up on next reboot
once your card is detected, you can set it to connect on boot through the network mgr
for yum, install yumex - its a gui which makes it slightly less painful than from the command line.
I found FC5 (used redhat/fedora b4) more comfortable than ubuntu (1st timer)
Apart from the wifi, everything else happened pretty painlessly
