TM8204 users: Background noise research

Could you all do some screen tests? I need to know if your LCDs can display colors correctly. The problem was mentioned before as "background noise" and is clearly visible if you check grey levels in 1% steps. It is very easy to notice with any screen test: some colors/shades of grey are not displayed as solid (blocks are filled with grain/noise) and it looks like GPU uses combination of two shades to get estimate color. It makes 8204 USELESS in anything related to photography/graphics. I need to know if you all have this issue. Check the driver and bios version + screen type, manufacture date etc. Thank you.

If you don't have screen testing software just leave me private message with your email address.

I totally support you Jaad, just was discussing this topic with one of my friend who is working at a computer service company and he says, that monitors and graphics implementation has always been kind of weakness of ACER, and so this problem can be related also to the way the card is implemented. Basically if it is not shielded enough or just some wrong cable put in...I am shooting blind, but coming from the fact, that there were only couple of us comlaining about this - and I think it is very visible issue once you have it, it may be manufacture related no necessarily HW. That woudl explain the magic self-repair some people were reporting after reinstall and then spontanneous comback. I am really curious, so I hope other users will do this little test and report their observation. Fingers crossed so it would be software related - then there is a chance. I have my new lappy with X1600 in and it is flawless, so I do not think it is straight ATi related...

You are probably right. Still, it's kind of suspicious that there still doesn't exist official ati X1600 drivers?!? It's been almost half a year now?

I placed similar thread on notebookreview.com and we have one more user who confirms the problem... I really think that it is common issue and I cannot understand how it is possible that people don't see it! I guess that it's one of the biggest issues of 8204 - it eliminates this notebook completely for really big group of potential users.

completely agree!! I was about to live with all the issues altogether with stuck pixel and buzzing. But this one was the biggest problem that made me return ven the fourth TM8204. It really sucks.

But - the reseller told me there was a guy who bought my returned unit and is superhappy with it. There are users and users. Tons of them do not care because it is not theirs (belows to companies), tons of them do not use it even for 1/5 of its capabilities and so never explore issues really, and tons of users do not know or do not come to the forums, other ton of them just hesitate to publish. Then there is the rest which everybody is pointing out to: see there are only those unsatisfied...and that is not true...

But - there is no ideal notebook. That is what I have learned and I gotta live with it. If you want an ideal computer, you gotta make your own setup. Not possible in notebook industry though...

back to the issue: I really did some research too and cant seem to see it on any other computers equiped with X1600. Quite interesting is that when running my nx9420 on batteries and setting up the 3D car stuff in Catalyst - I get some hardly audible buzz, but it is there. So X1600 (as well as all the ATIs cards!) definitely come with some luggage that nobody wants to talk officialy about! I am quite confident about this one.

I am having a problem and not sure if it is what you are talking about. While using my 8204 and say suring the web I get bleeds of light coming thru the screen. After a period of time, the color dissapears in the screen in very small areas in a small row and shows a bright light appearing as if the screen is cracked. When I scroll the screen the white bleed light scrolls with the screen also indicating it is not a pixel problem. Any fix to this??

Check different shades of grey. You should see the noise clearly. It's really easy to notice with any screen test.

Better version of Nokia test here:

Check brightness&contrast screen - all blocks should be solid color.

Hey jaad75,

Totally agree with you on the problem with the background noise. I sent mine back with the following image on the wallpaper.

The image is at 1680x1050 so you guys can test your notebooks. I am hoping they will finally fix it. If not I am going to cut my losses and sell it on ebay.

Great sample. I hope that everybody who has the problem is able to see it now. There is a hope that this is not a hardware issue, 'cause it doesn't exist (or it's much less noticeable) in Linux, propably...

http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...54#post2048054

But how to explain that some people don't have it then? With the same driver, bios and screen type?..

I guess - issues with the GPU implementation - even not shielded wire can do its job You know some of them buzz som of them not - sopme of them have the noise, some not...still strange I admit!

Hey Guys,

This is definitely not an issue with the LCD screen. I ran the test on my Hitachi replacement and guess what? You were right the noise is definitely present and visible!!! Also, that might just be my imagination, but when staring long enough at the grey bars, I could swear that the noise has been moving around - like the noise in DVD MPEG2 encoding. This looks to be GPU related.

Yep, I think it is related to the GPU or its connections. That would explain why some have it and some not. There might be some interference with something or / and the GPU...

I see my image link is down. I know it is a simple question but I don't use forums much. How do I include the image within my post and if I have to upload it somewhere, do you guys have any suggestions. I want to make this image available to as many people as possible to see if the problem is widespread. I will also let you know if Acer fix the problem, I should get my notebook back early next week.
