Inspiron 8600 or Sager 4780 17"???

Hello, im in a jam. i dont know if i should get a dell 8600 or the sager 4780... i love the 4780's 17" screen, and there 30 day no questions asked policy is the best dead pixel plain i've heard of! But i dont know that im very comfortable buying a non-name brand. not that sagers not big, but its a generic company... this is my choice...
Sager 4780:
pent 4 3.06mhz, 512 RAM(1 dimm), 128 mg ati radion vidio card, 60hdd(5,400rpm) 17" widescreen tv tunner, built in diggi cam, dvd-r/cd/rw combo drive. cost- 2,058$$$$
Dell 8600:
Pent M 1.5ghtz, 512 RAM (2dimms), 60 hdd(free upgrade), 64 mb vidio card, dvd/ cd-rw 8X 1,784$$$

To me its a no brainer the sager has double the gear the dell has, but doesnt have the name brand... is it worth buying a dell for the name and support?? or should i go with the powerhouse, and use these forums as my tech support???

it comes down to battery life. I would think you should consider the WSXGA screen with the 7200 rpm hardrive and the Radeon 9600 not ot mention the combo drive and you can have one awesome 8600 but the 4780 you configured is also a good system im guessing you configed it at Pctorque? they have th ebets competitve prices if you do consider picking one up.

I was in the same place as you. I liked the Sager. In the end it came to not wanting a desktop processor in a lappy. I know they are popular but I think as well the lappy makers are pandering to the performance set at the expense of over heating. I just had to remind myself of the size of the heatsinks on the CPUS and GPUs in desktopn machines. I figured somwthings gotta give.

Heat is an electroninc killer. I settled on the 8600 for that reason. It barely heats up and the fan never comes on. Albeit I have a sloer processor and GPU.

I think for a lappy the Pentium M is the way to go at the expense of all the CPU power. For gaming anyway it's all about the GPU. My 5200 is fine with me, maybe not for real hardcore gamers. But then again a 5650 can be bought on Ebay for $229 if it's something one wanted.

Good Luck

I started out buying a sager 4080 3gig cpu laptop. It was great except for the blistering heat and lack of battery life. But hey it was powerful!

I sent it back, taking advantage of the 30 day warranty on it and got myself an almost identically specc'd dell 8600 with a 1.6 centrino. I have to say this was the best decision I made. The battery lasts for over 4 hours during general web / office use and is stilll reasonably powerful.

Go for the dell.

My Company has a Preferred account with DELL, cause we purchase so many desktops and laptops through them, so we have a "preferred account manager" who gives us excellent prices on all systems.

You can also look for the Dell SB coupon, somtimes %15. This only works good if you live in a state that they do not tax.

I currently own a Lyksys wireless 802.11b wireless router. I have 2 computers hooked up to it that are NOT wireless. When I buy my 4780, I will want it to be wirelessly connected. Easier said then done when your a novice like myself

under wireless network , there are a couple different options to choose from. I would like to know:
1) what exactly is the difference between a internal wireless , and the 54 MBPS 802.11g wireless PCMCIA. Both are options under wireless networking.
2) Which one of these am I better off with. Knowing that i have the lyksys 802.11b already.
3) what exactly is bluetooth??

Wow living in New York Myself i usually piggy back on verizon's Hot spots since i have Verizon DSL

1. On most systems it comes down to range and power consumption and usually the internal is better since the antena is built into the screen.
2. Either way is good might as well be internal since its cheaper and less hassling
3. Think WiFi on a smaller scale about 300kbps max output and 30 feet in max range. usually used in printers, pda, phones to transmit data.
