dell notebook system software??

The last time that I had a dell rep walk me through my first reformat, he said that I didn't need to install this system software. However, I recently looked for dell updates and the system software is supposed to be required for correct operation of the notebook. So, since I haven't been installing this system software so far in all my reformats, how detrimental is it to my i9300? Do I indeed need this piece of software?

I have reformated and used the system without the notebook software update. Although I do not use the media direct or media buttons at all. I have had no issues that I know of.

Yes, you do Need the System Software. The DELL tech that you had spoken to is not correctly trained unfortunately. The system software is actually supposed to be loaded FIRST before even installing the CHIPSET driver - according to the DELL Engineer that I spoke to to my visit to Round Rock at the DELL plant...

There is an excel file in the directory that it is extracted to. The file will tell you every thing that gets patch/update by system and OS. The a lot of reg tweak, and some MS hot fixes that get installed most of which are for older systems. See example below and theres a lot more(sorry bad formating)

Notebook System Software (NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy drives, Intel Pentium-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR) communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration.

I have been deploying Dell laptops for years in a many corporate environments, and we always install the Dell Notebook System Software... 1st thing after loading Windows. We have had laptops with issues if it is not installed. It installs many PSS only Microsoft patches (i.e. not available for general download) and other registry fixes. As mentioned before, open the "nss features matrix v31.xls" spreadsheet to find out what patches it installs for what model (extract the downloaded file using WinZip or similar) Here's info from Dell's own website... What Order do Drivers Need to be Installed?"
  1. Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A compilation of critical Microsoft updates.
  2. Intel Chipset - Helps Windows control system board components and controllers.
  3. Video Card - Enhances video performance.
  4. Network Interface Card (NIC) - Enables and enhances the network controller.
  5. Sound Card - Enables and enhances the audio controller.
  6. Modem - Enables and enhances the modem.
  7. Wireless Network Card - Enables and enhances the wireless network controller.
  8. BlueTooth® Module - Enables and enhances the Bluetooth controller.
  9. PCMCIA/Smartcard controller - Enables and enhances the PCMCIA/SmartCard controller.
  10. Touch Pad/Track Stick/Pointer - Enhances the pointing device features.
  11. Other - Other devices and peripherals such as printers and digital cameras that are connected to the computer.
Note : If you have a Latitude D620, D420, Inspiron 640 etc that use STAC HDA Audio, you must install the MS KB888111 (Modem) or KB835221 (Audio) patch before the ChipSet software or else the sound won't work. See the KB's from MS
