The last time that I had a dell rep walk me through my first reformat, he said that I didn't need to install this system software. However, I recently looked for dell updates and the system software is supposed to be required for correct operation of the notebook. So, since I haven't been installing this system software so far in all my reformats, how detrimental is it to my i9300? Do I indeed need this piece of software?

The a lot of reg tweak, and some MS hot fixes that get installed most of which are for older systems. See example below and theres a lot more(sorry bad formating)

| Notebook System Software (NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy drives, Intel Pentium-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR) communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration. |
