What docks work with xps 1710?

What docking stations are compatible with the XPS m1710?

I know about the ones that you can get with your order (they are all DPort Docks right? These are just some sort of USB setup?)
TARGUS USB 2.0 Mobile Docking Station

KENSINGTON Expandable Notebook Stand with Detachable USB 2.0 Dock - Stand Not recommended for Inspiron 700m or Inspiron XPS (Why is this one not recomended for XPS systems? and if it's a problem why do they want to sell it with the 1710)

TARGUS CANADA Universal Notebook Docking Station with Video (Is this the "best" of the the docks offered with the system at purchase?)

Then there is the D-dock that aparently has a half-length PCI Slot and a DBay for a second Optical or Hard Drive. I have read that this is compatible with the 1710, but are there different versions of the D-dock?If so which one would I need?

I want to eventually buy a 2405FPW or 2407FPW but it seems that some docks (Targus Docking Station with Video) can't output to an external display at 1920x1200

From what I've learned so far the D-dock looks like the best of all the docks.
What do you think?

The one from Dell is a proper docking port - it connects into a special port on the underside of the laptop which then 'reroutes' various inputs through the docking station. The other ones you've mentioned are not proper docking stations, they're more port replicators as they just connect through USB.

there are not different versions of the d/docks. There is only one d/dock. However, there is also the d/port (d/dock minus the pci slot and d/bay), and you can get a monitor stand that will connect to either of these docks and put the power buttons in reach (on the front) and now there is a new laptop stand that connects to the dell docking stations.

Basically you have two official docking solutions for a m1710: D/Dock and D/Port

What is the difference between these two D-docks? One is $359.20 and the other is $503.20...

They both have the same Manufacturer Part # of "8W925" but they have a different Dell Part #, "310-2873" and the other is "310-3995"
Are they really just charging $144.00 more for a something that has no improvements over the other one?

interesting....one just says its for the latitudes and the other for the precision line. I'm sure they are interchangable, but I would call and ask

Looks like it...

eBay looks like the best place to get one.

In fact, there are so many it truly makes me wonder just how effective the solution is.

...that or it's a bunch of corporate sales.

Yeah that's where I was going to get one, but I wanted to make sure I was getting the right/best one for my 1710.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they are cheap on ebay because companies buy them for the employees and they either don't want to use them or they eventually get a new computer that is not compatible with it and have no more use for it. So there is a large supply and not much demand.

Has anyone that has a 1710 actually used it with the D-dock yet?

I'm going to plug my 130W power supply and M1710 in to my D/Port (I don't have a D/Dock, but I figure that it if it works in D/Port, it will work in D/Dock) tomorrow when I have a chance (I was going to do it today, but I ran out of time). I'll post how it works if no one beats me to it.

In case anyone had any doubts ...

I just successfully hooked my M1710 up to my D/Port and used the 130W power supply that came with the M1710 and it works perfectly. The only catch is that as far as I can tell, Dell doesn't sell a D/Port that includes a 130W power supply, so I guess you would have to order an extra power supply separately (if you need an extra). The D/Dock's built-in power supply is rated at 130W according to Dell's website though.

Sweet, looks like it's time to start looking on ebay.

I don't understand, why would you need another power supply for it (or use the one you get with the 1710) when it has a 130 watt Power Supply integrated?
That's because he's talking about two different Docking options. The D/Dock has 130W, but the D/Port only comes with a 90w power supply requiring you to have a 130w to properly power the M90 or M1710 connected to it

I ended up ordering one of these to carry with me, and I'll leave the adapter that came with the M1710 on the dock. Does anyone have any sort of experience with the Duracell auto/air/ac adapters?

So has anyone confirmed the D/Dock works with the M1710??

Looking for an answer also on that. Anybody? I need a D/Dock for my M1710 but the fact that there's 2 different ones (and I'm not talking about the D/Port) makes me wonder what D/Dock to get.

The Dell Part # "310-2873" or the other "310-3995" ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is exactly right. Do NOT go with any of the USB options because they don't really do all that much for you. They are just glorified USB hubs IMHO. The official Dell docks will allow you to connect nearly everything through the dock which means you only have to make that one connection.

Well worth the extra money.

I had that before with a 7000 series laptop and loved it. The docking station is a big plus in my book and is the primary reason that I am considering an upgrade early, but I am still leaning towards waiting for DX10 and 64 bit.

The question remains....which D/Dock works for the M1710? Dell has 2 D/Docks.

Have you considered calling dell on this one? I think they are the only ones who will be able to answer your question with any amount of certainty. Your best bet is to call Sm Biz Sales and ask them.

That's exactly why Latitude Docks go for so little on eBay. Companies buy them, their users don't use them. IT Boss wants them out of the storage closet and they end up at auction. MANY of my customers have stacks upon stacks of D series and C Series docks and monitor stands that have probably NEVER been used. They work, and they work really well (I Love using the DDock with my D820) but users just don't use them.

Ok,

I can honestly say that some Dell sales rep has no clue what they are talking about. Just called today...3 times...

First guy told me I must have a M170! I said no that the M170 is discontinued and replaced by the M1710...he was like are you sure? I saids yes...It's right in front of me. M-1-7-1-0. I was like OMG he doesn't even know the M1710 exists. I told him he was incompetent and should get up to date on the products he sells. I hung up...idiot

Second call, he said he didn't know there was an expansion slot under the M1710....that call ended also.

And third call, he said he would go talk the the "products specialist" to get the right info. He came back and said only a USB port replicator would work. I said really? Then why the expansion slot under the M1710 like the M90? He was like ummmm good question....I don't know.

So basically they have no freaking clue and I'll take my chances and go with a D/Dock that works on the M90. I checked some pics and the slots are identical.

I must say that even though it's not a common question for the XPS line, I was outraged at how badly they know their own products. Most of the times I waited and they gave me what was on their web site as the info. I can read....That's not why I'm calling you morons.

Sorry had to vent....
