What docks work with xps 1710? - Page 4

I had been holding on to my desktop, but now that my laptop crushes it there is just no need. I put my hd in an external enclosure and the rest is going on ebay! Already sold my x850xt from my 1 yearl old antiquated pc.

Actually I've seen both descriptions used to describe the types of cards that fit into the D/Dock.

Ex: The ATI Fire MV is built to fit into PCI slots of this kind.

Read the description for it.

Yeah, but i think you'll notice that when they same 'low-profile" they mean the card's length is less than 6.9xx" long...I think it's stupid that they use low profile when talking about the length.

However, you'll probably notice that most GRFX cards are longer than 6.9xx" so that is why ATI makes one specifically for these docks and the HPs that meet this requirement.

Now I just have to decide if I want a tv tuner, or blow tons of money on 2 extra 2407s (when they come out) and one of these ATI cards...hmmm...decision decision decisions....

Absolutely agree that it's lame that manufacturers aren't standardizing their description of the "fitting" of their products... it's why usually (in other posts) I say half-length/low-profile. Just got lazy in this posting.

I'm looking for a "docking" station that my xps1710 can be locked to(for fear of it being stolen at work), do any of these mentioned in this post have that capability? Or does anyone know if there are locking docking stations for xps1710s yet?
I don't have a D/Dock in front of me at the moment, but the D/Port seems to have some kind of a locking mechanism near the Ejection button.

It's a lever that you can flick into a locked position, with a hole near it. If it works like the older C series APR's then I think you thread one of those locking cables through it once the lever has been flicked over to the locked position.

That's just a guess though.

Never used it so not sure how it works.

Both the D/Dock and the D/Port have a slot for a Kensington lock just like the one on most notebooks. When the slider is set to locked and a lock is inserted, the dock itself is locked, and the notebook can't be ejected from the dock.

Nice! Thanks for the info.. heading over to ebay

Sorry I didnt reply sooner. Yes, both DVD drives can be used and I have 2 hard drives that are useable with the D/Module attached.

do you have a d/bay HD? if so, do you know where to get them, I've had a hell of a time finding one, though I'm sure they made them at some point.

What I have is a D/Bay Second Hard Drive Module. The Dell part number is 8t687. It is a module that you install a 2.5" mobile HDD into that fits into the D/Bay.
This is essentially what I have:

Have you guys had any luck getting the PCI slot in the D\Dock to work with your M1710 (or M90)? I just grabbed a D\Dock off of eBay, and everything (D\Bay, all the ports, etc.) works perfectly except for the PCI slot. Have you guys had any luck getting the PCI slot to work?

Post #43 appears to confirm it works on the M90.

Inside the dock I have an internal DVD+RW drive, Audigy 2 sound card with Altec Lansing 995 speakers attached.

Attached to the dock I also have this, with a 100gb HDD installed:

I have an Dell 2001FP attached via the DVI-D connector on the back of the D/Dock. This weekend I found a Logitech Bluetooth Dinovo Desktop onsale for $99. I must say I am loving this setup. I have the best of both worlds, a killer desktop system that undocks and becomes one of the best portables available today.

As it's an option on the M90 when you buy it, I'd be very disappointed in Dell if the PCI function didn't work. However, when configuring an M1710 there is no option to buy it. But I find it hard to believe they'd include the connector but deliberately cripple the PCI support.

That said I can imagine that the dock connects directly to the CardBus circuitry, and obviously the M1710 (and the M90 for that matter) don't have CardBus sockets.

Bah ... looks like I'm gonna have to grab a D610 from work to confirm that it is the docking station and not the laptop or Windows installation.

Please let me know how you get on - I'm importing one of these docks from the US and upgrading to an M90 to get the PCI functionality for a project I'm working on. If the PCI socket isn't supported, I'd rather not waste any more money and stick to my 9400/E1705 which is perfectly adequate otherwise.

Can anyone tell me if there is any differences between the 8W925 (Dell Part# 310-2873) and PD891 (Dell Part# 310-8112) D/Docks. The latter is listed at Dell for the M90 (about $40 cheaper). Otherwise I can't find any differences on the Dell site.

From what I can gather the M90 and XPS1710 use optical bays which don't have the release latch on the face plate of the module (just a retaining screw underneath). The other D-family laptops seem to have this other style module. Does this cause a problem if using a XPS1710/M90 in the older style D/Dock?

YellowIt4, coldcase: which are you using?

I'm using 310-2873 without a problem.

Is any one else having compatibility issues with the PCI slot in the D-Dock?

I've tried two video capture cards. The first is recognised, but the software is mega flakey and I've so far seen *one* frame, once. Otherwise it just dies. The second card blue-screened when installing the drivers (and took out my sound card and optical drive drivers).

I've also tried a firewire card. I managed to get this to work OK with an external hard disk, although at one point, one of the ports didn't work and I also had a big crash once when renaming a file.

I only have one more PCI card to try - an Audigy 2 ZS.

What PCI cards have you guys managed to get working? Any video capture cards? Any reports of some cards working but others acting weirdly or not working at all?

Can no-one comment on PCI compatibility with the D-Dock?

You know you want to!
