Battery not charging

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone's seen anything like this before...

My battery indicator light is green, and the power meter in Windows is reading 100%. However if I unplug from mains power it starts beeping as if it is on critical battery. Windows then typically starts to shut itself down, but runs out of juice before it can do so, as if you had pulled the plug on a desktop. It doesn't even start to power up when I press the power button, until I plug it back in.

I removed the power lead just now and it started beeping, so I put the power lead back in. The battery light is now orange. Power Meter started saying it's on 1% battery, charging, and it's going up gradually (currently at 11%). Mobmeter.exe however is saying the Charge Rate is 0.00w.

I would just assume that the battery has somehow been fried (although I don't know how this could have happened since I don't play games on battery - in fact it's on mains pretty much the whole time), but it was showing similar behaviour before, then a few days ago I got it going for 20 or 30 mins on the battery.

I've tried taking the battery out and putting it back in again, but there's no obvious bad contact.

Any suggestions? Could I have a virus (unlikely because I'm running Panda Security), or perhaps something's up with the battery driver? If I need a new 8-cell battery does anyone know where I can get one, in the UK preferably? Part number D870PBAT-8. When I google the code I can only find a couple of places in the US, and they're out of stock. None of the usual laptop parts shops seem to stock batteries for this model of Clevo.

OK quick update: I left it charging while using the computer on mains. The power meter got up to 15% or so, then after a few minutes went straight to 100%. I pulled out the power lead and it lasted 23 minutes before starting beeping and the power meter was back to 10%.

It's weird that sometimes the computer thinks it's on 100% charge when in fact it's on next to nothing... this seems to stop it from charging up at all. But it seems it is physically capable of charging up (to some extent at least), so the battery can't be completely fried...

For "Grins and Giggles" try this.

Let the battery fully discharge so that the machine powers down (DO NOT TRY TO POWER IT ON WITH THE BATTERIES AT THIS POINT). Now wait about a half hour before you reinsert the power plug - BUT BEFORE YOU DO - Open the "lid" about one inch (front side) of the lap top. The let the battery recharge with the unit turned off.

I have experienced some "quirks" with the battery and believe that it is centered on a bad circuit between the lights and the "charging unit". Once I power it up after an incomplete chare, the battery "flips" to 100% eventhough it has not been fully charged.

The 20/25 minute depletion time may be OK bearing in mind the age of the battery - they just don't seem to last as long as they used to. Grrrr.

Keep us posted..
