We need to know the beeping sound. Could be memory, cpu, or motherboard. If you have two or more sticks of memory in your computer try using just one. It might help to give us your specs too.

theres a number of things that could be wrong, and from what you have described, the hell if i know....

need more details

hehe sorry bout bad post.
i just took it appart and saw that the mobo (MSI kt4 ultra) was burnt near the pins for the power button. so i think its the motherboard.
the specs are:
athlon xp1600+
512 in one stick of corsair
radeon 8500

the beeping is to signal that the cpu fan isnt on. and when i looked at it it starts turning a bit then stops and starts stops... doesnt really get going.

also this happened when i had a minor power outage. i guess that my surge protector is dead

It doesn't neccicarily mean its beeping because of the cpu fan. I can unplug mine and the computer will boot no problem. The beeps have signifigance, explain to us what they are.

If the CPU fan is visually running then it could be a CPU fan speed sensor issue. But before that make sure the CPU fan is plugged into the correct power pins. THere should be three pins and they should be labeled CPU in the manual and on the motherboard.

its a usb keyboard. i tried it with a ps2 adaptor (im not sure that should work) but still not detected.

the cpu fan isnt running at all. its pretty weird actually: i tries to start but doesnt even turn 30 degrees before stopping. does this (start/stop) a couple of times and just stops. im pretty sure its connected properly. ill do some more testing in a bit to give you more details.

also, is it possible that even if a little chip burned on the motherboard, it could still be running? ill try to post a pic of the burnt part. but its about half an inch to the left of the pins for the power/ reset buttons and leds.

thnx for the help.

Burning is not good. Time for a new motherboard. Get a new power supply while you are at it.

heh i can immagine. but ii got my power supply about 5 months ago. you really think i need a new one??
also now im hesitating. the problem is i need a socket A motherboard and those are getting scarcer by the minute. i just got a laptop to replace my desktop in many things i do especially for gaming.
i dont really wanna buy new everything, so i was wondering if i should get a new motherboard and CPU combo with a different socket or if i should just replace the motherboard and keep the rest intact.
if i do get a new motherboard and CPU i need it to have agp for my radeon, but id maybe like it to have PCI-E for future upgrades.
or i could get a cheap motherboard and wait till the rest dies on me (especially the radeon) then replace the whole.
im pretty much stuck. what do you think?
keep in mind i dont use the desktop much anymore. its more for my gf. i use my laptop to game now.
thnx again for your help

You can reuse the memory and get a Socket 939 motherboard ($70) and a AMD 64 3000+ CPU ($130) for around $200 total. That way you can upgrade later to an X2 processor and DDR 400 memory. Good luck!

I thought you wanted PCi-e? The only cheaper motherboards are uATX. Yeah it kind of sucks having to buy a new processor with a new motherboard. Hard decision.

yeah i wanted pci-e for future upgrades. but now that i think about it i dont think ill upgrade for another 6-8 months, maybe even a year.
you think i should definately go for the new mobo cpu combo?
keep in mind i dont really use the desktop andd i definately dont game on it.

If it's a worthless PC then definitely don't put too much into it. If it still has a good sized hard drive (> 100GB) and more than 256MB of RAM then definitely upgrade the motherboard and CPU (if you have the money). If this is not your primary PC then just get a new uATX motherboard.

dont call my baby worthless. hehe jk
it is pretty old. i built it back in 2001
its got 3 h drives totaling 240Gb. but i can always get an external enclosure and use one with my lappy. it also has 512Mb of OCZ DDR. so that shouldnt go to waste.
you have a good point there with the uATX. ill think about that ang getting a uATX case (i have a full tower cause i used to watercool.)
ill have to think it over these couple of days. ill just have to live without any computer (i sent the laptop in for repair) for a while.
i appreciate all the help. ill tell you what i decided when it comes time to order.
