Best Wireless Gaming Router

Thread Starter
I am planning to get a wireless router and not sure which one to get.

I am fixing an old desktop to give to my 3 yr old and make that have wireless connection due to his room setup.
I also plan to use wireless for gaming once I finally get a laptop in a few weeks.
I am also planning to keep my desktop wired at this time.

I have heard either the D-Link 4300 or the Linksys WRT54G.

What I need for this router to do:
  • Great connection for gaming
  • extra port to keep 1 PC Wired!
  • Durable and Reliable

So Which is the BEST Wireless Gaming Router that has an extra port to keep 1 PC Wired and 2 others wireless?

PS:
What wireless card should I get for my son's PC so it can be connected to this router that I am looking for?

don't take this the wrong way...but what does a 3 year old need a computer in his room for??

but anyways the having some wired some wireless shouldn't be a problem with most routers (not sure on all i've seen a bunch like this though) they have the wireless antennas and 4 or 5 ports to plug in wired connections, other then that I dunno i have a Netgear i got for 65$ i feel it can be a bit faster for internet surfing on the wired connections...other than that i love it.

I have an old desktop that just needs a CD Drive so I can upgrade it to Windows XP.
My 3 yr old has been playing games online on my PC for quite soemtime now.
Considering I like to play games also, I am going to give him this old desktop as it should fulfill the basic internet access for him to play online games.

Kids are growing up fast this days and damn smart too

Wow, you guys need to chill out a bit.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS and it seems to be just fine for my gaming needs. I think you will be OK with any of the newer brand name routers. I’ve seen some routers that are advertized for gaming, you may want to search around and see what you find. I’m not sure how much of a difference there would be, though.

Basically a gaming router allows certain multiple ports to be opened up by a session with the push of a single button. Most modern routers allow this weather they are marketed as gaming or not. If unsure stick with a gaming router (as labeled) and your all set.

I have the wrt54gs as well, it works pretty well...

Just be careful when giving internet access to a 3 year old, you might want to look into some kind of filtering program to keep him off of sites he shouldn't be.

I can't believe that the reasoning of my 3 yr old would cause such a ruckus but oh well.
We treat him an adult and not baby him why he is a smart young padawan

Thanks for the info though.
I think I will get a Linksys WRT54G.
Even the Net Admin here at work suggested to get a Linksys.

As for a Filtering/Parental programs, what should I get and where?
Is there any that are free?

Most times my son usually just go to sites I have bookmarked for him.
Usually Nickelodeon and Noggin and CartoonNetwork.
Also have the Star Wars site bookmarked for him as he is a SW freak lol.
SO those are pretty much what he does and games he plays plus the Lego Star Wars and Dora games I installed for him.

PS:
Would it matter which network Card to get for the desktop I am fixing?
if I am getting a Linksys any suggestion what card to get?

you might want to look at the wrt54gS

it has speed booster, not sure how much it helps, but i dont think it would hurt.

as far as what ethernet card to get...it doesn't really matter. They will work with any router.

You knwo what I was looking around and stumbled upon the Belkin Pre-N
Anyone has any info/experience on it?

So far I got it down to 3 Rouetsr now:
Belkin Pre-N (upto 108mbs) = $89.99 (Adapter NOT included)

LINKSYS WKUSB54GS (upto 54mbps Data Rate) = $93.99 (Adapter included)
(I think this is just a WRT54GS bundled w/ a card?)

LINKSYS WRT54GX2 (upto 108mbps Data Rate) = $99.99 (Adapter NOT included) If money was no object, which would be the BEST one to use?

Actually, if you want a good performer, I would recommend the WRT54GL, which has double the RAM and flash memory of the current WRT54G, and double the flash memory of the current WRT54GS. You should pay attention specially to the RAM, as I've read on the net that the new WRT54G is having performance problems.

If you don't mind the limited 54mbps G speed.

All you have to do is go onto the manufacturers website and download the users manual. I am sure someone would do it for you but I don't have the model of your router/access point.

anyway, i said WRT54GL. does not matter if the other LINKSYSes are crap (don't know), but this one is a winner, no matter what.

on filtering ... I would suggest making a windows signin in his name, a quick html page as his homepage, and only put links to sites you want him to visit. I have had my daughter on this for about 2-3 years now (she just turned 10) and it has worked well. It takes all of 10 seconds to add a new link to the homepage and pretty well keeps the kiddies on safe sites.
