They are both reliable. But I would find it easier to walk into an Apple store to return or fix my computer than to have to send the computer back to Amazon via mail.

Personally, I've had NO problems with my MBP. I love it. No regrets on the purchase. I enjoy every minute of it. I have a 1.83Ghz with 512MB of RAM. It gets a little slow when running Office for Mac through Rosetta. Another 1GB of RAM will cure that real quick. Otherwise, its been flawless.

oy! if u buy a compaq at walmart do u take it to walmart for warranty service? no. what no one else offers in the industry, besides apple that i'm aware of, is a widespread retail presence where u can buy a computer (a mac in this instance) from any vendor and walk into your local apple store to SIT DOWN AND TALK with a tech about any issues u have without fees while it's under warranty. if i remember right, apple's warranties are all now global in their coverage as well. please do some research next time.

consider signing up as a student developer or whatnot. u could get a 20% discount that way. u would have to pay $99 for the developer's purchase option, but even then u beat the pants off the academic and amazon prices on more expensive models like the MBPs (even while having to pay taxes).

if u want a stock machine and u can't do the developer route for whatever reason, amazon has the better prices. apple's academic prices look good on the surface but typically end up $50+ more expensive than amazon bc u have to pay taxes. with amazon u are tax free in all but 3 states, and shipping is free. so after rebate u r better of w/ amazon. if u want to buildto order and can't do the developer's discount, then apple academic is the way to go.

hey man, DON'T hijack others threads . Post your queries in a different place. This thread is for discussing on few issues related to MBP and NOT where one can get it cheaper. Try comparison shopping or call apple directly whether you are eligible for getting the discount.

VanillaEps, a question for you: are you happy with the brightness of the screen? I saw one model at a local store, it seems somewhat dull compared to a Powerbook or an iBook.

Did you play with the brightness of the screen at all? With the F1 and F2 buttons? They control the brightness of the screen. At its brightest setting its absolutely flawless. In its dimmer state, whilst conserving battery power, it can be a little dull. Personally, though, I've never compared it to an iBook or Powerbook, but I feel that the screen, its colors, and its brightness is just right for me.

The new LCDs are supposed to be super bright. 280 nits I believe compared to about half that for the PowerBooks.

No, I didn't play with the brightness simply because I didn't know how to do that and the machine was configured in local langauge. I trust your words. Thanks for this tip.

Kakaze, are you referring to 15" or 17" MBP?
The 15; I don't know the brightness of the 17 but it's supposed to be comparable.
