If that's the case, I'd rather shop at Value Village...

I've wondered about that too. I'm still in college and i see people all the time barely making food money, yet they LOVE their powerbook. Then I see the 'think different' ads and i wonder 'think different? think, at all.' That being said, I am very impressed with the powerbook/MBP line. Not the power per-say, but the formfactor and the whole combination is about right. The ibook never really did anything for me. I could buy an averatec for less, but i'll concede it would have a lot less battery life.

Remember, you get a massive discount on Macs at the campus bookstore. I used to sign up for 1 class buy my mac and drop the class after I graduated so I could continue to afford macs. But those are not the technical students. Architecture, Engineering, 3D artists, MIS, CS, Mathmatics and law students all use PC's running windows or Linux. Many schools are requiring Windows laptops now. Mac's are actually a luxury these days ergo you see lots of celebs using them since they don't actually have to do anything.

it's so true, just because we're often to see tv presenters with MACs sitting in their desk, that's why it's so popular, but I don't mind shopping clothes is salvation army shop, while put my money for a new MBP.....

Actually I am sick of people who say that Mac's are expensive. I used to be one of them who used to think that macs are expensive. I think macs offer goodor great value for the money. They come bundled with great software that you as a consumer really use. I am not putting down windws here but when you get a windows machine and load all the software...etc you price is almost to that of a mac. I am also kind of a person who is just not going to have a machine but one that also looks appealing to the eyes. If you look at all the factors I think that apple offers very competetive pricing. Infacts Sonys are expensive on the windows side.

lol. that or u could argue that macs don't have to be pretentious about how great they are, because they are. really, u could make all sorts of arguments about what the ads mean.

I'd have to agree... Although I personally sound like a double standard for my view that "Macs are expensive", well, computers in general are expensive...that goes w/out saying.

I've always been a firm believer in the "You get what you pay for" computer buying advice. I would say Macs are priced exactly for what they are, Macs. In contrast to PCs, yes, they are expensive; however, you're comparing two completely different types of computer. It's like comparing a Ford to a BMW--I know that argument has been used before, but it still rings true.

If you consider 'what you are getting' in and out of the box, it's a fantastic deal; however, if you compare it to what you get in/out of the box of what you just picked up on sale at Fry's over the weekend, it's two completely different things.

Sun boxes are hella expensive, but you never hear anyone crab them for their reliability or speed (they're going to x86 soon, I read somewhere...AMD, I think).

Apple's are not for everyone and I think many can agree to that. I also believe that Apple's cut out a lot of the nonsense in computer use--more driving, less shifting.

That said, I have both and use them for COMPLETELY different things...
