External DVD-ROM Drive for 8600

So I have a DVD+R/RW drive but can't copy DVDs because I don't have an extra DVD-ROM drive. I asked Dell support and they told me that the usb ports are powered. In this way, I can use an extermal dvd-drive and draw power from the usb port. I've been looking around and I only found Addonics to be the only good external dvd-rom drive (reasonable price too) with power draw from the usb port.

Please share if you have any experience with Addonics or any other dvd-rom drive.

By the way, I also asked about upgrading the ports on the right side so I can use a DBAY drive with DVD-ROM and they said it is not possible. I also plan to use the DVD-ROM drive to watch DVDs while on a plane to Asia with the secondary battery plugged-in.

Hi,
I have the dvd writer on my dell too, havent copied any dvds yet though. But when I have copied cd's in the past I was able to create an iso (i.e. cd image) on the hard disk, which then was used to copy to a blank cd in the cdwriter.

Im pretty sure something similar can be done with dvds? Have you tried creating an image on your hard disk then inserting a blank dvd and burning the image to the dvd?

You can buffer the copy by having your software copy the image to your hardrive and then copying it to a blank disc

Thanks everyone. I have not tried it on DVDs but I do have experience on CD copying via the HDD. I will try it this evening.

I also intend to use the external dvd-rom drive to watch dvd while the secondary battery is plugged-in. I will be pondering whether to proceed buying it or not.
