Toshiba M105 or Lenovo Thinkpad T60

I'm looking to buy a notebook for law school and i'm torn between the Toshiba Satellite M105-S3012 (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...HO&coid=-30546 ):

Intel Core Duo 2300 (1.66GHz)
14.1" XGA Trubrite (1280x800)
1GB SDRAM
100GB hard drive
DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer)
$1349

and the Thinkpad T60:

Intel Core Duo 2300 (1.66 GHz)
14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050)
1GB SDRAM
80 GB hard disk
24X/24X/24X/8X Max CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo EIDE Ultrabay Slim drive

$1599

The thinkpad has a better screen and a better reputation, but the toshiba has a bigger hard drive and a dvd/rw drive (its also a lot cheaper). I currently have a Toshiba satellite 5105, that has been a great computer for me and and has lasted almost four years. Now, its finally having its first problem and the hard drive is starting to beak down.

Does anyone think that it is worth spending the extra $250 on the thinkpad? And are there any other computers that I should be looking at?

If the hard drive speeds are the same, the toshiba and take the extra $250 and get their extended warranty.

1. Doesn't your school allow you to get an educational discount? You should be able to get both of those for cheaper.

2. What kind of warranty does each come with? I think that's an important factor.

3. Where did you get that t60 from? On lenovo's site, the 2623D6U is $1599, which has:

Core duo T2400 1.83ghz
14.1" SXGA+
512mb ram
80gb harddrive
DVD burner
3-yr warranty

I personally would (and did) pay more for a thinkpad, in general; I think the build/keyboard/trackpoint are worth it. I can't say in this instance though because I don't know anything about the toshiba. But either way, you should look into the educational discount...

My school has deals with dell and apple, and I don't want either of those. The lenovo has a 3 year warranty, the Toshiba has a 1 year warranty. I kind of don't like the idea of paying more for a warranty though, I decided not to on my computer now and I didn't have a single problem with it, and I know plenty of people who have long warranties and have had problems that weren't covered by it.

I did get that T60 pricing from Lenovo's website, its $1599 becuase i upgraded that ram from 512 to 1GB. Do you think that 512 is sufficient? I guess the question would be what is more important: a faster processor and a dvd burner, or the extra ram? I always just assumed that ram was really important.

Yeah, a warranty is one of those things where you either get ripped off or it saves your ass.

I don't think 512mb is sufficient. However, manufacturers jack up the prices on upgrades because that's where they make a lot of their money. It's a good idea generally to order it with lower RAM and upgrade that yourself. From lenovo, the 512mb stick costs about $100, but from other websites you can get it for ~$40 shipped.

On the other hand, I think things like the faster processor and DVD burner are more important to order with the computer. DVD burners are expensive separately, and the processor you're pretty much stuck with. Of course it depends on how important those things are to you. Even if you order the first one you listed, I'd stick with the 512 and upgrade it yourself.

You could also check out www.costcentral.com, they have thinkpads for a bit cheaper than from lenovo. I've heard positive things about them. The only thing is that you don't get the same return policy that you would get from lenovo. Here's one and here's a good one.

Thanks for the info. Costcentral looks like a good deal, i'm not sure what you mean exactly by a different return policy though. Also, is ram easy to install on your own??

Different return policy: you can return the notebook bought from Lenovo in the first 30 days, no questions asked, while Costcentral allows returns only if unopened or defective, and only in the first 15 days.
