HP DV8000Z & HP DV5000Z - EXTREMELY Confused! PLEASE Read:)

OK...

I have been in the market for a BLACK notebook (or at least the part the inside of the notebook be black when I'm using it.) I refused to plump down the money Dell wants for their XPS 17" model so I ended up at HP's site.

About a week and a half ago I ordered the DV8000Z (I wanted a AMD system that supported 64 bit for the future since I am was buying a new system.) Well, the model arrived (CTO) but I didn't like it, it was just to big and gawdy for my tatstes. I did however LOVE the blue LED lights all over it and the screen was pretty nice (although the "Brightview" threw me for a loop!) It almost looked as if there was a thin film of glass over the LCD, very strange and not use to what I'm looking at when it comes to LCD's but it was nice! I ordered the notebook with the backup CD for XP Home SP2, for an extra 10 bucks, so before I decided whether I was keeping it, I did a clean install of XP Home. I then reinstalled all the drivers from HP's website, since they don't provide a drivers CD (this is my first complaint right off the bat!)

Now here is my question regarding the drivers when it comes to wipping a drive, and reinstalling the OS with HP's systems.) I have read numerous threads on here where everyone is saying if you buy an HP and you wipe the drive to do a clean install, you are going to be in trouble!? I don't get it...

I installed all the drivers for the DV8000Z from HP's website, everything worked perfectly! I even went into the device manager to make sure, there was no exclamation marks next to any hardware, nope, 'all systems were good to go'!

The notebooks come with SATA harddrives, you guys have said on here that you have to retrieve the drivers for the harddrive from the notebook BEFORE you wipe the drive or you are screwed. I still don't get it!? Since when do you need a driver for a harddrive? If there was a driver needed for the harddrives, why are they not included in the driver/download section for the specific model? Again, I'm really confused.

Maybe someone can explain this for me?

OK, onto my next journey coming up:

I still want a black notebook (I currently have a Dell in Silver and I'm just totally over it!)

So I finally decided that the 15.4" model notebook is perfect for me (which is what I currently have.) So that is what I'm going to go with. And once again, having a 64 bit processor is important to me for the future. So I have decided on the HP DV5000Z.

HOWEVER...

For some odd reason, HP is not offering the option to add a backup OS CD when you CTO the DV5000Z, yet they offer the selection for the DV5000T. So I called and complained about it (as most of you know I'm good at that lol), anyways...all I got were run around answers from the sales people, nobody had a clue as to why the option is not available for the 5000Z but it is for the 5000T. I even went as far as contacting corportate offices about it (hey I need a a OS CD, the first thing I always do is do a clean install of the OS when I buy a new system.) The lady in corporate was really nasty with me about it and said "if I had a dime for everytime a customer has called me complaining about this, I would quit my job!" I said well maybe that should tell you something! People want and DESERVE a OS CD with their new systems, it's not right for you NOT to include it (not to mention not including the drivers CD.) Anyways...

To make a long story short I got nowhere with her.

I called the parts department, they want to charge me 48.00 to send me a OS CD and a drivers CD for the 5000Z (should I order it of course.) I am furious! Why are they charging people amost 50 bucks for a CD that SHOULD already come with the system in the first place? I can understand 10 bucks, but 50???

So here are my problems concerning the HP DV5000Z:

1.) The LCD screen is ONLY offered in a WXGA resolution (1200X800) and you can opt to order it with the "brightvew" technology. My question is: I have NEVER owned a XGA screen before in either non wide screen sizes or wide screen sizes. By settling for a WXGA screen (I would probably order it with "brightvew" unless you guys advised against it), is the screen going to be less quality then say a WSXGA or WUXGA? When watching movies on my notebook, am I going to be missing parts of the picture on my screen? I know everyday applications will be larger on the screen, and I will have to do some scrolling on ocassion but other then that, is it a bad screen, cheap screen or is it really ok to 'settle' for a WXGA screen? Really, I need some good and honest opinions here.

2.) As far as the operating system goes. Since they refuse to provide a copy of the OS, is it ok if I use my Dell XP Home SP2 CD to reinstall Windows on the sytem when I get it? Or is the HP machine going to reject the CD because it came from Dell? I assume an XP Home SP2 is XP Home SP2, what is the difference as to who it comes from? But maybe I'm wrong... If the machine rejects Dell's copy of the OS to install it, I guess I have to pay HP 48 bucks to send me the backup copy of the OS and the drivers CD then, or else I'm going to be screwed.

3.) Once I do get the system wipped and the OS reloaded, when it comes to installing the drivers, are there ANY drivers that I'm going to need to install for the DV5000Z that are NOT on HP's website? And if so, WHY? This question goes back to the question I asked about regarding the SATA harddrives and you guys saying you need to install a driver for these drives. I still don't get that at all.

4.) When it comes to CTO'n the system with a harddrive, do I really want to 'up it' to a 5400 RPM drive? I mean it's not extremely expensive to do so but would I really see any performance gains from having a 5400 RPM drive, verses a 4200 RPM drive? If so please explain

5.) Finally, regarding the battery. They offer a 6 cell (standard) and a 12 cell battery for the DV5000Z system. The sales guy at HP told me that a 6 cell batttery would last me UP TO 5 hours (which I do not believe at all) and get this, he told me the 12 cell battery would last me up to 10 hours! I have NEVER heard of a notebook battery lasting 10 hours between charges...I just don't buy that at all! My situation regarding a battery: 99 percent of the time I have plugged into the wall, sometimes I will lay on my bed and be online for a few hours in the evening but other then that, I'm always plugged into the wall...even when I go out of town as I am right now typing this to you all in my hotel room. So, my question is: Do I need to waste my money on a 12 cell battery (that by the way will stick out from the bottom of the system and annoy the hell out of me) or would a 6 cell battery work just fine for me?

OK, this was a long first post and I think I'm done with it now. I look forward to reading some replies on this.

Thank!

P.S. I'm assuming (from what I've read on HP's website) that all the same ports and connectors that are on the DV8000Z are also on the DV5000Z? From what I can tell, that is correct but I just wanted to double check.

Thanks.

1: The dv5000t uses SATA hd, the dv5000z, if it's like the dv8000z does not. The SATA drive uses a SATA controller... The OS needs the drivers so the OS can talk to the controler. It's sort of like you using a SCSI hd, when installing the OS you install the SCSI drivers into the OS so the OS can talk to the SCSI controler. For IDE it's not needed. Another thing to consider is SATA drives put less loading on the CPU, plus as an extra added bonus they use the SAME SATA connectors as a DESKTOP, which means you can connect the drive to a desktop that has SATA if needed. Since more and more laptops and desktops are going to SATA, you may what to consider that little detail in case you need to recover the data off the hd at some point. With a SATA drive no special adapther is needed. (Right now I have some SATA cables on order- when they get here I'm going to "Ghost" (Image) /Backup the harddrive... connecting the laptops drive directly to the SATA controler in my desktop, Ghosting the image to a spare drive for safe keeping.... After that I plan on deleting the recovery partition. Once I do that I'm going to install a fresh copy of XP PRO, configure my apps, then Ghost that.... At that point I may make my own "recovery" partition (I bet it will be ALLOT smaller than the 7 to 12 gig Hp's recovery partiton take up).... That, and or make a DVD backup.... Probally do both as the "Ghosted" partition if it's like my desktop image is only going to take up 2 -3 gig max. 2: 5,400 over a 4,200? go with the 5,400 3: On buying it. buy it thru www.costco.com , instead of HP. You should save some money, plus they have a 6 month return policy, instead of 21 days thru HP. 4: On the battery.. Whatever battery you deceide on remember that li-ion batteries start to degrade from the day of mfg, and if you don't use it, or keep it plugged into A/C power all the time it's going to kill it. 5: On the battery, if you do deceide you need one, buy it at the SAME time as the laptop. When I bought my dv8000t (thru www.costco.com) there was an option to purchase an extra battery for $83... The same option thru HP, $99.... and if you order an extra later thru HP it's like $160 -$180... On the AMD, vs Intel, and future proofing, keep in mind that the 64 bit OS's and the apps for them, the drivers are going to take 2 years+/- to get everything working smoothly.... For the people who jump on the 64-bit OS, I project they will have a bunch of problems during that time period, and when you do the software people are going to say it's a hardware problem and the hardware people are going to say it's a software problem. On future proofing, also keep in ming XP is just now becoming a "mature" product, and it has a HUGE installed based of people using it, people that support it, and people you can call on for "help" when a problem arises, plus a huge base of drivers that aren't in the beta stage. If it was me, I'd buy whatever works now, and worry about the next OS in two years. Here's a review of the dv5000t series, info about reformating: http://forum.notebookreview.com/show....php?p=1318531 One more thing, when I was trying to deceide between the dv8000t and the dv8000z I went to a couple of places that had them and opened with a bunch of apps to simulate the loading I would normally be running on the machine. The dv8000z models would "lock-up", be slow to respond to commands. The dv8000t with the dual core breezed right on. PS: the Dell install disc isn't going to work more than likely. If it was me and HP wants to charge you $48, I'd go get a copy of XP PRO off Ebay. On the drivers: When you do get your machine, make a copy of the C:\\SwSetup folder before you go deleting anything.

Yes you are right about the SATA drives, I th ought the DV5000Z did come with SATA drives, it seems that only the DV8000T does, I must have missed that one.

More on 64bit...isn't Vista being released later this year? I'm wondering why you are putting a 2 year time limit on needing a 64 bit processor to gain all the benefits?

Costco...do you still need a membership with them to shop or is it now free? I had a membership with them years ago but never used it so I never renewed it.

Thanks.

Oh, regarding the OS's on eBay...I don't use Pro, I use Home Edition, are the copies on eBay really legal or are they bogus? It kinda makes me nervous buying something like that on eBay as most of them say they are XP Home, but then when you see the pictures of the auctions, it shows a 'key' for Pro.

64-bit... just because the OS gets "released" doesn't mean it's going to work with your apps, drivers, etc.... How Long did it take for win95 to become stable? Apps, Drivers, etc., Ditto for XP, and all the ones before it. Here's a link to the pro's and con's I posted before in one of the dv8000 /z/t threads.... Here it is. May not have all the facts right and you can nit-pick it to death, but it makes allot of sense. http://www.notebookforums.com/showpo...5&postcount=15 It's going to be a while. OS on Ebay legal? Yes. Costco, yes-membership, but you can buy without it. BTW: The (z)'s I did check out when loaded down, were slow to respond, did lock-up. I did the same with last years model Toshiba at Sam's (p4) and your could have 20 apps open and it didn't even slow down. Z models froze up....

Hmmm...the review here about the dv8000z shows some pretty good specs:

Of course the one reviewed has good spec's, spec wise... Most of the time when someone does a review they always review a unit which has all the options.

For example:

The base dv8000z comes with a 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive, (Not two 80 5,400's)
The base dv8000t comes with a 80 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive

The price differance isn't that much when you fiqure in that, plus the (t) has a better video card.

Go to www.costco.com , select >COMPUTER> Customize and confiqure a (z) and a (t).... you can build it any way you want it. You did notice the dv8000z they tested had the 1680 x 1050 screen? That's not standard, neither is that second hd. Keep in mind those aren't SATA hd's in the (z) series.

I used to have a Sager 3790 with a WSXGA 15.4" and now I have the HP dv5000t with the WXGA Brightview 15.4" and I just love the brightview and the size really doesn't bother me. There is sometimes when I will have a couple windows open and it would be great to be able to work with them all open but sometimes I just have to minimize and restore.

Hard drive speed- don't get less than 5400 rpm. The faster speeds make data access faster and you can run programs, games, and access files faster.

I would suggest getting the dv5000t b/c you get the great dual core, the new quickplay 2.0, and you have the option to get the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 that has 512mb memory.

About the battery, definitely go with the 6-cell. I got a 6 cell with mine and its great. The 12 cell just makes the laptop way more bulky and heavy (and also more uncomfortable.

You talked about 64-bit AMD but it does not really matter. Vista isn't supposed to ship till 1 FULL year from now and knowing Microsoft it will probably get delayed to fall of 2007. Besides the fact that its not coming out for a long time, 64 bit applications/games will not appear or will not be completely stable until at least 6 months after that. Also, the dual core makes the laptop really fast, and its got a cool sticker that says core duo.

Another plus to buying the new dv5000t is you can have the 10 os restore disc. Be careful though, like myself, many have deleted their partitions (restore and quickplay) and now cannot use quickplay 2 correctly. If you want to reformat, you would have to do what wearenotalone talks about and ghost the hd until the bastards at HP make a friggen qp2 disc.

Overall if you really want the amd then you can get it, but the laptop will still not perform as well as the core duo dv5000t does. I gotta say, I just love mine. I am working on getting the $45 (actually ended up being $60 total) disc in hopes I can provide HP owners the ability to reinstall qp2. In the end, I would definitely get the dv5000t over again and I definitely recommend it to you. Hope this helps. Don't hesistate to ask more questions.

P.S. if you think the price is too much, get the student discount by going to shopping.hp.com/education and either signing up with a student ID from a college (it really doesn't matter from what year or college, you could probably even make it up, lol), or anything else you can see signing up as.

Yeah you do that, they will find out and they will bill you for the money that you were discounted. When I signed up for the APP discount on HP and three days later I got a letter from my college about me using the APP discount with HP. So you never know what could happen.

Hmm...oh well...I used my sister's Berkeley id and it worked fine but it is a real id so I stand corrected.
