winmedia 10 problem

some of you may have read my posts regarding the complete failure of not one but 2 hard drives for my alienware. after i got everything back up an running, i can no longer watch dvds on windows media player. i get an error saying i don't have the proper codec, but microsoft would be so generous as to offer it to me for $15.

this is bullcrap for a few reasons, mainly because on all my computers i have always been able to watch dvds without buying or installing anything. my laptop plays them fine, my previous desktop did as well, even after reformats. i could even watch them on my alien before... why did it stop?? also, is this anti piracy? makes little sense to not let me watch my legit movies that i purchased but i can still watch all my ripped ones.

any ideas? what is going on??

It might have worked on your other machines because you installed the manufacturers version of windows, which might have come with the codec. You can get free codecs thouhg. Google Defiler Pack, comes with a bunch of codes you might need.

C00D116A: Cannot play DVD video

that is the error i get. the defiler pack doesn't seem to help.

edit: i got it playing dvds now, but it is choppy and has frame rate and stuff in the corner that i can't make go away.

WMP 10 plays DVD's straight out of the box. Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling it?? that's an odd problem

that is why i thought this was such a wierd problem. it played them before my new hdd, and it plays them on my laptop straight up.

it now plays the dvds, and the sound is fine but there are subtitles that i can't make go away and also the hesitant video playback.

making progress slowly...

Use VLC instead (free). Or load Power DVD to get a really could MPEG2 decoder (trialware, but the codec remains after the program expires).

MPEG-2 decoders require licenses. your previous machine likely came wiht PowerDVD or WinDVD, which has the licenced MPEG-2 codec so it could play it fine. thats why they wanted to charge you $15 for a codec, because the decoder licence is not free, and Media Player 10 does not come with one (and they're rather expensive, too, IIRC from an old discussion on this hobby OS site, its like $5 for every unit sold with a licensed DVD codec)

if you got any copies of WinDVD or PowerDVD laying around, install it. or you could do as olyteddy said, just download the trial version of PowerDVD and that'll install the codec for you
