well, i honestly dont have much beef with the acer except of the heat. the thing is actually sturdy for plastic and has sustained without any damage at all a fall of 3 feet of height.
in fact, lately i force the cpu to work on 800mhz, and i never reach 60°C at all, unless im gaming, which i reach 60°C exactly. the bad thing is, at 800 mhz, its really not the greatest performer. i just wish Acer tought more about their designs, because this one is clearly a business only machine, not made for intense gaming, yet they put an x700 on it and expect that no one would play on it!?
instead of being a quiet laptop, it would work well if fans actually kicked in when they should, that would increase performance a lot and reduce heat, at the expense of the noise.
anyways, right now im saving money, and the two choices i have so far is this Asus s96j and another Acer (5672wlmi with x1600). the Acer costs 1069dlrs, and comes with Core duo 1.66ghz, 1gb of ram 667mhz,120gb 5400rpm, x1600 of 128mb @ 475/370.
obviously im leaning much more to the Asus, but the price difference might hit me and in the end i might not be able to get enough for the Asus so... i would settle for the Acer.
Honestly that Acer sounds good on paper but has subpar performance for some reason. it does perform good in games, certainly much better than my current lap, but has a 3dmark05 of mere 2.9k and for some reason a 3dmark03 of 4.8k
i know the Asus is in the 3.9k range for 3dmark05 and 8k range for 3dmark03, that is why im trying to get enough money...
anyways, someone know if it is possible to control my cpu fan? i want to make it run at high when gaming. also, i want to undervolt. the readings according to some programs are :
battery multiplier 4x = 800mhz and 1volt
maximal multiplier 8x= 1600mhz and 1.45 volts
i know reducing it would certainly get me a couple of degrees off, which i suspect would be enough. not to mention that if i somehow control the fans, im sure i can get more degrees off.
